Just curious here, as the title says. Is there one, or is it just down to personal preference? It's just thought that whenever someone says they have such and such a make of laptop, someone else joins in and says they are crap. I have an Acer Aspire 5101AWLMI and it has not given me any trouble at all since i bought it back in February. So what do you think is one of the best and most reliable makes of laptop out there? Or is there not one? :)

As you already pointed out there will be many different user experiences, because, say, one can get a great laptop from "A" OEM and another one can get a defective laptop from the same OEM.

In my case I got this Acer Aspire 5102WLMi because of:

1.- It's great price considering the hardware it has.
2.- Expansion options (it wasn't easy to find last year a computer that supported 4GB of RAM for less than $1000)
3.- Acer -in this case- is one of the biggest OEM's out there (yes, Dell and HP are above it), so it wouldn't be such a problem to get replacement parts just in case (nothing necessary at the moment).
4.- Personal preference: I personally preffer AMD, and, by the time I got the machine no other OEM had a good AMD offer.

I think that if you can balance this points you can get a good machine.

Thanks.
Joe.

I like the Fujitsu LifeBook T4220 (http://store.shopfujitsu.com/fpc/Ecommerce/buildseriesbean.do?series=T4220) the best but that is just personal preference.

If you get a Fujitsu in your hands you can see the difference in quality from a laptop made in Japan as opposed to elsewhere.

Also the Fujitsu LifeBook T2010 (http://store.shopfujitsu.com/fpc/Ecommerce/buildseriesbean.do?series=T2010) is very, very nice and if I had to buy a new laptop this would be my first choice.

Love my PowerBook G4, Taken it back and forth across the county more times than I can count. Never a problem and even survived the grandkids watching videos on it. Oh and it was a gift so the price was outstanding.

Personally prefer Dell. Had 4 of them and never a problem. Use IBM's at work and to be honest i dont rate them at all.

Currently using a Dell XPS M1710 and Ubuntu has had no problems at all with it.

Those lifebooks are very small. They wouldn't be any good for me, they do look nice though.

Sony's ultraportables are always rock solid, their other models have had problems but the ultraportable line has never had any issues.

Of the laptops I've owned, my Thinkpad wins pretty much hands down.

Of the laptops I used / Want, Look no further than Voodoo PC (http://www.voodoopc.com/)

From the aesthetics to every component under the hood, nobody can touch these desktops or laptops for a "market-branded" solution.

They are not cheap though! (hence why I do not own one)

Hewlett Packard dv6000t! It's very compatible with Linux. The specs are also great for the price paid.

It looks like it's down to personal preference then. I do enjoy using my Acer although i have not tried any other yet, this was my first. I don't know whether i would get another Acer or try a different one. Although the next laptop i do get is going to have a normal display and not a widescreen.

This Acer is my first laptop too. Newer Acers (Gemstone) are quite nice, it's a shame they already have Vista.

Anyway my dream computer is the Acer Ferrari http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/fr5000.htm.

Thanks.

stick with a major name and you'll be fine. i prefer Dell for the $, but i like Sony too, but they're more expensive than they're worth.

I use a Toshiba. It has audio problems. Apparently Toshiba have some sort of custom implementation of the Realtek SB450 chipset which breaks standard drivers, even for Windows installs.
