Anybody know what this means when a video card is described as having "512MB (256MB Local)"?

Does this imply that of the 512MB, 256MB of System RAM is being used to make up the 512MB? Or, does it mean that it can also utilise 256MB of System RAM in addition to the card's own 512MB effectively making it 768MB?

Many thanks.

it means the graphics card has 256 mb dedicated memory, but can borrow another 256 from the system ram, look up turbomemory and the likes to see how it works :)
