I just call myself an Ubuntu user. Linux is the kernel, and it is unfair to all the hard work others have put in. After all, Mac users are Mac users, not BSD users.

That being said,

geek
LXuzR
Freedom lover
(K, X, ed, etc)Ubuntu user (as said)
LXR

but I like LXuzR best, or LXusR (I like the "us" in the middle and it just looks cool)

RTFM is the answer we are not usually supposed to give in that forum. Since this is a family place, I can not otherwise call attention to one of those words in particular.

That serves as reply to the query on how and where to find humans, of course.

yes i'm a kid.
i am home schooled so when i'm bored i just mess around with things.
i didn't think people would want to learn it its just for the moment i got nothing better to do.

Hacking has nothing to do with legality. This is just an unfortunate mistake made by the media. Someone who breaks into other computers is not called a Hacker, but a cracker. Some crackers are also hackers, but certainly not the majority.

See the Jargon File (http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/index.html) for information about hacker culture (this file has been around since 1975).

crackersI can't see news outlets using that word. It has been used a lot in the past, 70's and 80's, in the US and it was a racist word against white people. For those of us that remember those days, you have to admit it is a bit funny to hear, "In the latest news. A few cracker's broke into several computers at....." I can just see George Jefferson doing the story now, ;) :lolflag:

By the way, here's the exact definition of Hacker in the Jargon File: http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/H/hacker.html

1. A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary. RFC1392, the Internet Users' Glossary, usefully amplifies this as: A person who delights in having an intimate understanding of the internal workings of a system, computers and computer networks in particular.

2. One who programs enthusiastically (even obsessively) or who enjoys programming rather than just theorizing about programming.

3. A person capable of appreciating hack value.

4. A person who is good at programming quickly.

5. An expert at a particular program, or one who frequently does work using it or on it; as in ‘a Unix hacker’. (Definitions 1 through 5 are correlated, and people who fit them congregate.)

6. An expert or enthusiast of any kind. One might be an astronomy hacker, for example.

7. One who enjoys the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing limitations.

8. [deprecated] A malicious meddler who tries to discover sensitive information by poking around. Hence password hacker, network hacker. The correct term for this sense is cracker.

The term ‘hacker’ also tends to connote membership in the global community defined by the net (see the network. For discussion of some of the basics of this culture, see the How To Become A Hacker FAQ. It also implies that the person described is seen to subscribe to some version of the hacker ethic (see hacker ethic).

It is better to be described as a hacker by others than to describe oneself that way. Hackers consider themselves something of an elite (a meritocracy based on ability), though one to which new members are gladly welcome. There is thus a certain ego satisfaction to be had in identifying yourself as a hacker (but if you claim to be one and are not, you'll quickly be labeled bogus). See also geek, wannabee.

This term seems to have been first adopted as a badge in the 1960s by the hacker culture surrounding TMRC and the MIT AI Lab. We have a report that it was used in a sense close to this entry's by teenage radio hams and electronics tinkerers in the mid-1950s.

It will be hard to get any uptake of a generic name for Linux users.

I like 'nixers myself - as it incorporates the broader OSS community and can be varied for your 'nix of choice.

Perhaps Ubuntu users could be "ubunixers/kubunixers/xubunixers"", Mepis users "mepinixers", Puppy users "puppinixers".

This probably wouldn't work for PCLinuxOS.:)

But hey, there would be some cool ones:

Ubuntu Studio - ubustudinixers

It could even be personalised.

RAV TUX would be a XubuEnlinixer

Fuscia would be an UbuOpeBonixer
