:popcorn:watching this as Gutsy is working well on my AMD64 for nearly 2 months now with nary a slip-up (stupidity and self-inflicted aside). I'm looking forward to seeing how popularity of 7.10 will drive Adobe and others to port some of the 32-bit apps to 6-bit (dreamland is so good until the sand fairy kicks a heap of it in your eyes).:guitar:

Can't wait =)

Haven't been on the Ubuntu scene for that long (since May), but it's my OS of choice =D

Using 7.10 beta (or is it RC now after the .14 update?) and it's been flawless (besides for that sneaky .13 kernel update without new video support)

Seven days!! Too bad I have to work on the 18th and 19th =( Won't get to play with it much until the weekend.

'ere we go, 'ere we go, 'ere we go...

Using the beta, despite a bizarre graphics pb that only shows up if you're running FF, or a weird FF problem that affects the graphics. The net effect is the same: system freezes :-( Think hard reboots.
I can't wait for the final release :-)

i have never been one to wait eagerly for any O/S release be it M/S or anyone else for that matter.

But...

This time, its different for me.

I have swapped from XP Pro to Ubuntu a few months ago and i really love using this O/S , and im so looking forward to the next release in a few days time.

The thing i love most about being "assimilated" so to speak, is now i can have a new O/S every 6 months if i choose, rather then every few years.

Rock on Ubuntu!

Frak
October 12th, 2007, 02:16 AM
on the 18th your Update Manager will alert you to update your current Distribution (Feisty) to the newer (Gutsy)

misfitpierce
October 12th, 2007, 02:17 AM
If you wait another week(7days) update manager will offer you option at top. If you want beta-RC and want to upgrade you type sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -c -d or something of the sort and it will open update manager with it at top. Note upgrading does take time depending on speed... at least 700MB worth of updates. :)

I would wait until 18th when it gives you the option auto when 7.10 is fully done.

If you just update your packages will that bring it up from the beta to the RC to the Final? I already read this I think but I am tired. Forgive Me. Just moved to Kubuntu from Windows Server 2008 beta, and I love this system. Thanks...

misfitpierce
October 12th, 2007, 02:21 AM
Yes if you keep up to date it will take you to final. I would say it is pretty safe to upgrade now. But there may be minor bugs in some things such as sleep or so on. I would recommend waiting 7 more days. Not that long to ensure a bug free environment with everything working. :)

I am anticipating this release by...

leaving my PC running FreeBSD on non-stop until the release day and until I burn the install CD with K3B. So far I have an uptime of almost 4 days. Nothing impressive. (I have a dual boot setup of Feisty and FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE).

In my Ubuntu partition, I have / and /home split in different partitions so I can do a clean install without losing what little data I have on there. I haven't bothered doing feisty updates since there is no point right now.

Also, those who are running Gutsy Development, if you've updated to the latest and run

sudo lsb_release -a
You should come up with this

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 7.10
Release: 7.10
Codename: gutsy

No matter what your running, it'll just say Ubuntu (i.e. Kubuntu and Xubuntu come up as Ubuntu)

Three days to go and logout sounds still do not work, the GDM doesn't display anything other than the default orange/brown at boot, the ability to have single screen Compiz configurations was just broken, and there are persistent printer and CUPS errors.

These are basic things that should have been fixed and stabilized a month ago.

I hope they will be in the next three days.

I am a fervent supporter of Ubuntu, but am very worried about this release.

By GDM do you mean the login screen graphic you cant change? B/c I changed mine to a gibbon monkey that says gutsy gibbon on it just fine... lol. As for logout sound.... 1 sound.... i'm more worried for overall stability of programs rather than 1 sound and login sound works fine which is all I really care for :)

I'm also waiting eagerly for Gutsy release! :)

I'm worried though. Usually new Ubuntu release has several new features. But this time it has LOTS of it that I'm afraid it will produce more bugs.

I have a feeling that they purposely cramped everything inside gutsy so that by the time of hardy release, those new features will be bug-free. Being LTS release, I bet hardy will not be given as many new features as gutsy.

I understand, but as a hardware/firmware/software engineer with over two decades of experience I can assure you that when simple things do not work, most often major things are wrong.

I want to upgrade from dapper LTS. I assume a clean install is the only option? I have my / /home and swop on seperate partitions.

So when I reinstall, is there a step in the installer where you specify where your /home is? Also will this not format the /home?

Hi,

this may be the wrong area to ask this, so i apologize in advance.

anyways, i notice there are quite a few gutsy torrents available on isohunt.com which all seem to come from ubuntu.com and were posted in the last few hours. what is the deal with this? part of me thinks that it wouldn't be released early just by torrent, but on the other hand it makes sense that by the 18th there will be a lot of seeds around to help out, so in that respect, it doesn't seem completely unreasonable to think that. but i was hoping someone would know for sure before i spent all this time d/ling it

thanks

It was a very funny thread to read. Lots of humor and anxiety. Feisty was officially out around post #2149 (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2480880&postcount=2149) :)
With approximately 24 hs. to Gutsy (usually it's released around 12:00 hs. UTC) I thought it would be funny to star a new thread with a similar name to wait for it (and make it a tradition).

It would take a lot of heat off of the servers if people would go ahead and download it early and they apt-get upgrade when it "officially" releases. A couple thousand people downloading it at the exact same time is a pretty heavy load for a server. I'm certainly not trying to ruin the mood for anyone that loves the suspense, but for those of you who seem less concerned about that and more so about the bugfixes, it's a good idea to go ahead and download it now.

So excited about this release! Feisty was my first experience with Ubuntu, and I'm so smitten with it I'm going to be using Gutsy to finally wipe my XP partition.

My heartfelt thanks to all the developers involved in creating Ubuntu, and also to all those people here on these forums who have helped make my foray into this tremendous system an absolute breeze.

Here's to Gutsy, and the future of Ubuntu!

ubuntu site went down under heavy traffic during the last release. Even the forum suffered from heavy user load.

Might be wise to upgrade to the release candidate today or wait 2-3 days before getting the new release. Ideally this is where torrents come in handy.

Yeah, I can't wait for the release either. I've been using Ubuntu since tribe 5 and have really enjoyed the ride.

I must say it was a bit of a learning curve when trying to map a Windows 2003 Server shared printer.

Also, my laptop refuses to awaken from sleep. I have to kill the power. AND, when pluggin in a projector to the VGA connector the screen flashes a few times and then Gutsy tells me it needs to run in Safe graphics mode. Nothing is displayed to the projector. APART from that, its GREAT.

I've noticed that the new printer options gives you the choice to 'Scale to fit' when you print a document! THIS IS A GREAT FEATURE!!!!

My boss soooo badly wanted this feature as all of our letterhead documents are PDF's with no margins.

Thanks Ubuntu Dev Team!!!!

At the same time, Mac OS X users are waiting for the "Leopard" release.
I suggested a special page for the Gutsy launch (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=536957), and nobody cared about it... but Apple did exactly that with its home page: http://www.tuaw.com/2007/10/16/the-leopard-countdown-begins/

About that game we could play FAZAN ... it's a game we play in Romania to pass the time. It's something like this: a guy says a letter (actually it goes trough the alphabet another one sais when to stop). Then the one who said stop has to say a word starting with the letter at which the alphabet stopped. The next guy has to say a word that starts with the last to letters of the last word that was said and so on.

For example we have players 1,2,3 & 4.
1 recites the alphabet
2 sais stop
1 sais the letter he reached let's say R
2 sais for example Random
3 sais OMnipotent for example
since there is no word that starts with NT 4 is locked so he has an F and he has to say the alphabet and the cycle repeats.

Everytime a person is blocked he/she gets another letter. When U reach FAZAN U lose :D

Hope I've been pretty clear. Maybe we can adapt this game to the forum :D

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-website

Nahhh...

After a few hours, the fix would be released without the need for a Bug Report.

Ha ha, I often do this to people. I'll say, "Oh look, I got one rupees change." or "There are 1 furnitures in that room." (!) It's funny. Or maybe it's just me.

I've noticed you put:

Kind Regards

Dave Rich

at the end of every post you make.

Just wondering why don't you make it your signature?

Signatures are a sign of laziness ;)

Kind regards

I installed Gusty RC and I can hardly notice a difference besides Exaile having the Equalizer , a new set of Icons and the Desktop freezing randomly.

I stayed awake till late hours when edgy and feisty came out and still we had no release to download, so I think I'll pass the refresh-hitting-5hour-episode this time and just go to bed and tomorrow hopefully download the Gutsy release.
And I'm +3GMT.

Hello friends!
I want to be one of the first lucky guys to download Gutsy. I'm in Ottawa, Canada now, and I don't know, at what time EXACTLY new ubuntu will be released. Can someone tell me?

And by what time-zone ubuntu.com countdown works? London?

Thanks in forward and HAPPY NEW RELEASE! :)

cogadh
October 17th, 2007, 09:49 PM
It will be released sometime between now and tomorrow, probably before midnight, Canonical time (whatever time zone they are in).

Why not beat the rush and just update to the release candidate that is out right now, then all you'll need to do is get any updates (if there are any) to end up with the full release?

It will be released when it is released.

Mirrors are currently syncing and preparing.

Please use torrents if at all possible.

I have not been here for quite a while, but can we sticky a thread with links to the torrents and encouraging people to use them instead of killing the servers.

The torrent files can be found here (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors). Not all locations have a torrent file availible, how ever most of them do, just pick the one you want, it might be called something like this "ubuntu-7.10-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent". Unless you have removed the BitTorrent client it should either be opened right away or saved somewhere and you'll have to open it your self.

Yes, we do. It's 7:19am here, and still no Gutsy!! D'oh!! Why is the rest of the world so slow!!!!

Actually, the waiting in this thread is half the fun. Unfortunately I have to go to work now. I forbid you to release Gutsy until I get home!!
