I'm considering buying a new customized Compaq SR1010Z series PC. (http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_series.do?series_name=SR1010Z_series&catLevel=2&category=desktops/compaq_presario&storeName=computer_store) However I have a doubt concerning the video card:

It appears listed as being a 128MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200XT, but according to the official site (http://www.nvidia.com/page/fx_5200.html) such a card does not exist. Could they be reffering to a GeForce FX 5200 Ultra instead?

Incidently, what do you guys think of the system. I'm thinking of getting 512MB DDR-400MHz of SDRAM to go with an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ CPU @ 2.4 GHz for about $ 550. Hehehe, I'm mildly interested in gaming (namely playing The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (http://static.elderscrolls.com/images/art/ob_pc/obliv25B.jpg) 8-)).

P.S. 1: BTW, do you guys how is the Linux support for said card?

P.S. 2: If you can think of a comparable better deal for a PC, please share.

I had a 5200 and then a 5700 Nvidia card. I now have a 6200oc and just installed the kernel-headers then downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers from Nvidia (the ones in Ubuntu are older and does not work that good with newer nvidia cards) and works fine.

I have an FX5200 that's generally a base model, but I seriously doubt any FX5200 series is going to have the kind of horsepower needed to play a game that looks like that.

Anyway basic driver installation is easy as pie. I haven't bothered with the newer drivers though.

As long as the game runs half-decently, I don't mind. Besides its either that or buying an Xbox 360. (http://games.slashdot.org/games/05/08/17/1220230.shtml?tid=211)

The fX5200 is a crappy card, but hey in the Linux world it's probably better than many high-end ATI cards.

I have this card.

It's not bleeding-edge, but it delivers performance entirely adequate to the tasks I give it. In Linux, it's...not much. When the hardware-accelerated desktop features are fully implemented in xorg, that'll change, though. If the graphics memory is used during the normal Xsession, then theoretically it frees up physical ram for other processes. but I have never verified this for my own syste.

In Windows, I run Rome:Total War at moderate detail settings satisfactorily--(AMD K7, 512MB RAM, nothing fancy), and run Call of Duty at 1024x768, again at a notch below maximum detail. I don't complain.

But I have modest expectations.

its a compaq, they dont know anything about video cards. just a typo. that is either a regular 5200 or a 52u.

personally, i would get a ps3(dont buy an xbox, stick it to "The Man";)). even the lowest end pc can run ubuntu just fine, so i would just use ubuntu for daily tasks and the ps3 for gaming.

but if you do decide to get a new pc, make sure it has an nvidia card(like the 5200) cause ati support is crap. vote with your wallet, ati will catch up soon enough.

actaully, there is a 5200xt. its most likely a stripped down fx5200. buy it with integrated graphics nad get a ti4200 off of ebay for next to nothing. thats probably your best bet.

In any case one thing is for sure, you guys didn't tell me what I wanted to hear. ;-)

I think that for normal usage of a PC (without gaming), a separate video card is not a justifiable purchase. I might as well go with more ram and a chipset.

As far as "sticking it to The Man", TES: Oblivion won't be released for the PS3! *argh* No Oblivion, no sell. [-X

the card you refer to does exist, I have one in my HP Pavillion a640n....its alrite, and gets the job done for what I play, but I've never gotten anything that looks as good as the pic of the game u linked to, or even close to that for that matter.....its a low end card, but its better than nothing...
