This is a thread for discussion about Black or Dark themes in any DE, (Screenshots not necessary, the one below is just to inspire discussion on "Black Themes") Have fun and remember to be kind to each other ;)

Sometimes things are better in black & white, like the e17 "Black Theme" with a white lion background on Xubuntu 7.10

No this is an old one, I mainly wanted to enter into discussion into "Black Themes".

Do you have a favorite "Black Theme" on any DE?

I started with the Lion background and first I was going to go with a "Milky" white theme but then I thought the Black/White contrast would look better together.

KDE is very, very nice perhaps one of the very best.

I was just reading where KDE4 will work in Macs, also.

This should further the development of KDE.

Black and white themes can be very impressive.

Lions on the desktop can also be impressive, especially the one shown at the start of this thread.

What has one to to with the other? The lion is beautiful and of a very light color, but it is neither black nor white. I think it would also go well with a black(ebony or dark grey) and very light tan or ivory scheme.

In my case i always liked clear, white or "cream" themes. Dark ones always stressed my eyes...
Fail to see why i started to like dark/black ones lately... maybe it's the age? Or cause i have a new HPw2207 very shiny and very black...

Here my collection of links for black themes for several DE:
for e17:
http://www.e17-stuff.org/content/show.php/BlackTheme?content=60376

for enlightenment (e16):
http://themes.freshmeat.net/projects/blacke/

for gnome/XFCE:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/G-Tangish+Black+%28Bansteen%29?content=67857

black one from ubuntu studio:
http://www.belutz.net/2007/05/11/installing-ubuntu-studio-theme/

One of my favorites, for fluxbox:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=320104
(the only thing i miss on e17 is a way to set border windows transparent, event fake transparency as in fluxbox would be nice...)

For KDE:

(?? never use this ...)

thanks! it's "strange" see parts of my usual desktop on others screenshots

btw, i changed the ibar opacity to work in a full transparent shelf, to be very discrete and unobtrusive.
On a shelf with an image maybe would be better revert to a non transparent effect. It can be made by simply editing the default_ibar.edc file and replace all "color: 255 255 255 128;" with "color: 255 255 255 255;" and recompile edj again :) (tweak themes is easy ;))

EDIT:
 it's even easier! I discover now that one can assign every little piece of e17 to a different theme or mix what ever one want. Oh boy!
Configuration -> Themes -> Advanced. From Theme Categories pick modules/ibar and from Themes choose BlackTheme. Leave all the other other set to BlackEmerald,

I'm feeling inspired to try e17 again!

It's easy, after all. And if you end up not like it, you just have to delete it.
It's small, don't require much disk space, and don't mix files/libs in your system, so don't break nothing and when removed don't leave "ghost" files everywhere :)

PartisanEntity to answer your first question you don't necessarily need a special theme with e17, the default bling-bling theme is quite nice but if you favor a different look the links Rui Pais provided are awesome.

With That said my two favorite themes are the ones built by Rui Pais(which he built on existing themes) found here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3530578&postcount=61).

PartisanEntity welcome to the world of enlightenment I hope that you enjoy e17 as much as I do and choose to make it your default desktop session.

It's always more enjoyable and more rewarding if one can share what have done or know with others, at least those things done/learn with the heart.
And i'm glad if people can more easily experiment, and if possible like, e17.
I just try to share my experience, to show that instead of get something precompiled blindly from the net (and that explain a little the myth of e17 being difficult), one can, with a little care, build a very stable environment and with an easy maintainable, good looks and lots of comfort in day-to-day use.

Completely agree.
I have a mixed e17/gnome (my wife and my kid use gnome cause they are used to Windows Desktop like environment) and, specially for Edgy, my pre-alpha cvs e17 was much more stable then default gnome
Usually the worst that i found in e was theme breakage, but even when that can be easily solved by making a personal theme based on default bling, thats always updated. :)

Yes, cool for full dark desktops, but clear pages (like ubuntu forum) became weird, unmatched, white...
A problem with deep specialized themes is that acting over random stuff they can look strange (like a desktop theme with slideshow module or a browser theme that will have to deal with endless sites, each with it's one design...)

I have found e17 the most stable DE on Linux I have ever experienced.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4908

Really??? As much as I love it - everytime I try to change the volume it crashes!

Anyway, on-topic, the Meguiddo (http://my.opera.com/community/customize/skins/info/?id=1998) theme for opera is amazing (RAV TUX, I came across it on one of your threads), I reckon it goes with any dark theme.

Yes mixer module it's broken (at least with alsa versions of ubuntu) but that don't make e17 unstable. It's a loadable module, enlightenment work normally without it (i never miss it cause i have a keyboard with volume keys...)
Can't you use another volume manager from other DE you may have. gnome-volume-control or the equivalent of it for xfce4 or kde?

This hasn't happened to me but I use the ALSA Mixer/ALSA mixer GUI for volume control.

I agree about the dark Opera theme "Meguiddo" it is the best "Black" theme on Opera, I wish someone would port that over to Firefox.

I have no problems with the ALSA Mixer/ALSA Mixer GUI

Also if people follow Rui Pais's guide on installing e17 CVS, they will have NO problems.

(just stay away from "First Run Wizard" in the modules)

I don't really have a problem with not being able to change the volume as most programs have their own volume slider. I just wouldn't agree to E17 being the most stable - it is, though, my default as I love customizing it.

BTW I did use the guide - thank you Rui Pais

It would be interesting to see what your "Hardinfo" is;

Which parts?...I don't really want to upload the whole thing.
I did use hardinfo in feisty but never understood a lot of the info, and I'm a bit hesitant about uploading what I don't understand.

Nothing to worry about, its just some benchmarks and information about your hardware.

I don't really have a problem with not being able to change the volume as most programs have their own volume slider. I just wouldn't agree to E17 being the most stable - it is, though, my default as I love customizing it.

BTW I did use the guide - thank you Rui Pais

We seems to have different definitions for stable :)
For me something not stable, on a DE, is something related to it's core, that work dangerously and inconsistently. Mysterious crashes and bad behavior, etc... in the case of mixer it always fail under recent versions of alsa, i would classified just as a bug. That of course it's bad (and that can last for long it's even worst).

Anyway thanks for call my attention to it (as i said i wont use it much...)
I will post a warning about on the how-to and keep an eye on it to see if it gets updated.
Meanwhile RAV TUX gives an excellent suggestion for users who have a bigger need for that functionality, alsamixer from terminal and alsamixergui (in repos) don't require any extra DE application.

Thanks.

Yeah, I guess your definition seems to make more sense, and it's only a minor annoyance. I'll give alsamixer a go.

On a sidenote, is Get-E (http://www.get-e.org) not accessible or is it just me?

For me, thats the really downside of e17, sometimes something buggy stays untouched for months, when not completely abandonned by they authors/maintainers :(
Let's just hope that it won't happen with mixer, like it happened with evolume (among others)...

On a sidenote, is Get-E (http://www.get-e.org) not accessible or is it just me?
sometimes get-e side is down or hard to get, try:

(this last link it's the only one working for me now)
