I'm curious how much memory you guys typically use as you're on your computer? Mine is typically around 35-40%, is that pretty average? BTW I use openbox only, and have a bunch of nautilus file browsers and a firefox always open.

288/2025 MB. I'm not sure I'm answering correctly.

You can't really compare memory usage amongst users in a meaningful way. The usage requirements are totally dependent on the types of apps you run, how much ram you have, how long your machine has been running, whether you use mixed libraries...

around 20% of a gig. i'm usually just running mpd+ncmpc in urxvt and some browser (usually epiphany). thunar and gimp would be the apps i'd open several times a day, but i don't leave them running. and, for the most part, i'm usually in openbox.

Try the 'free' command in a terminal instead. It will split it up into actual used and buffers/cached ram.

129/882 Mb

Laptop is usually around 20-25% of 768MB
I'm using 385 MB of 2026 MB on my desktop right now. Not sure what percent that is.

---total --- used ------ free --- shared --- buffers ---cached
515840 --- 504056 --- 11784 --- 0 --- 13248 --- 246752

This makes me happy, unused RAM is wasted RAM. Better than writing into SWAP.

With a vmware server (I know, yes, but I want to test 64 bits linux distro, so no virtualbox !). Currently using a vmware session with 512 Mb shared :

$ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1005 994 11 0 4 655
-/+ buffers/cache: 334 670
Swap: 2941 297 2644

So, my ram is well used ;)

1.9GB/2GB used here, but 1.4GB of is it cached, lol.

169Mib out of 1.96Gib

But my swiftweasel cache brings it to like 1.5Gib.

Surfing pretty heavily, running Azureus - conky shows using about 360MB of 1024

Top shows nearly all ram being utilized... just like we like it to be!

I don't think it's best to show copyrighted material downloaded from the web. Reflects badly on the forum. Wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea.

I have no knowledge of what you are talking about.

Ironic you mention it, since it's perfectly ok to discuss ways to burn cd/dvd's of movies and such. :p

Which one is copyrighted? Conky or Gnome terminal ? :)

I usually use around 200mb

Probably around 24Mb at boot, never more than 64Mb. It differs between machines though. I had a 300Mhz Pentium II that would boot to the desktop on 17Mb and never needed more than 42Mb for casual use.

On the laptop:

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1003 859 144 0 113 326
-/+ buffers/cache: 419 583
Swap: 0 0 0

On the desktop (not on right now): Around 160MB.

The other desktop with vector linux runs really low, (it only has 128MB total), but I've broken it right now, so I can't tell.

My desktop directly after boot and login 325MB / 2048MB (with compiz). Highest memory usage I had when I used in parallel GIMP, Lightzone, Thunderbird, Firefox (many tabs) ~1600MB / 2048MB (and some swap)
At work I run a command line installation under VirtualBox (but that's Debian Lenny, not Ubuntu) - 26MB / 96MB

Hmm - just checked the system monitor - apparently emerald is using 4Gb of my memory but the total memory used is 348.3
