What is the best way to upgrade/install KDE4 beta/RC?
Is there a handy how to?
do you have to remove all current KDE applications first?

There's a way you can install it and create a separate session for it. That's what I would do.

yeah thats my question is how?
I tried installing it, but I left the old version on and it did nothing, so my question is do I need to completely remove all old KDE apps?

No, you can leave them installed. I did this once, but I can't remember all the steps to it. But I had it side by side with KDE 3.5.7
