This was proposed a while ago, but apparently evaporated...

Basically, it would provide a metapackage for installing Edubuntu with Xfce. This would be very helpful for schools with old computers (i.e. all schools), since Xfce is designed to run fast.
It's actually not too hard to make an Edubuntu-themed Xfce anyway; you just install edubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop, then change the style to EdubuntuColors, the icon theme to Gartoon, and the desktop background to /usr/share/backgrounds/edubuntu_default.png. (And probably take away some of the desktop icons so it's not so confusing.)

Has there been any progress on this proposal?

I see there is a spec on Launchpad.net
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/edubuntu-xfce-desktop
...but no update since August last year.

I've deployed edubuntu to just such an environment as you describe (old computers), and multiple instances of Gnome (especially with Firefox open) really bogs the terminal server down.

There is a package in the repos called edubuntu-addon-light

Edubuntu add-on packages for a light desktop
This package depends on software to provide a lighter desktop
for Edubuntu using the xfce4 desktop environment.

Don't really know what's in it though.
