I HAVE UPGRADED MY COMPUTER :D w00t!

so ya, i spent all my money on computer parts, and gave my computer a well needed upgrade

heres the specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3000 socket 939 (1.8ghz, might overclock it to 2 ghz, eqivilent of the Athlon 64 3200)
MSI RS480M2-IL motherboard (built in Radeon Xpress 200, 100 mbit ethernet, 8 USB, 6 channel audio, firewire, SATA RAID controller)
Infineon 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM (planning on adding another)
Western Digital 160GB SATA hard drive
LG 52x CD-RW
420 watt power supply


the next thing im getting is an Nvidia GeForce 6600, 256MB graphics card. i need more money first.

Sounds tasty now, except for the ATI card.

its not too bad, the GPU is 400 mhz, and doesnt do a bad job on halo. unfortunately, it takes up 64 MB of my system memory :-x that will be fixed soon i hope

I think you can get a Dualy Opty from Penguin Computing for about 1800$ thats why I asked.

mmm....nice....but i dont have that much money. total money spent on this was ~$450 CAD

Every time I've upgraded in a similar situation the shared memory reverts to normal use, so you should get it back.

do you think it's worth getting 64bit, even though there are less packages, etc?

I just got a similiar system myself. You can always use the 32bit ubuntu if you have to, athlon 64s are the best you can buy either way.

for now, its running windows xp. as soon as i can secure myself a copy of the 64 bit version, ill upgrade to it. when i add another hard drive, ill dual boot Ubuntu on it. ill definately give the 64 bit version a try, but i wont be expecting much, as ive heard its rather buggy. but as has been said, i can always go back to the 32 bit version
