The eSkwela Project, a word play on the Filipino equivalent of "school", is a flagship project of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT), through its Human Capital Development Group (HCDG), that is envisioned to provide ICT-enhanced educational opportunities for Filipino out-of-school-youth and adults. The initiative responds directly to a national development priority and will bring e-learning opportunities and ICT for learning resources to mobile teachers / instructional managers and out-of-school learners in the Philippines in an exciting, innovative, and locally meaningful way.

Under this project, community-based e-Learning Centers or eSkwelas will be established in major centers around the country to conduct ICT-enhanced alternative education programs for out-of-school youth and adults. These centers will serve as venues where out-of-school learners and other community members can learn new skills and competencies, review for the Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Exam of the DepEd-Bureau of Alternative Learning System (BALS), and/or help prepare OSYs to rejoin the formal school system.

ang medyo ma-ipintas ko lang ay yung monitors na gamit nila,

ba't naman yun ang binili nila, ang pangit nang support sa linux nang AOC monitors :(.

but it is sufficient enough for educational use.

I actually have had a decent experience with a very old AOC monitor. It was my beloved monitor for more than 3 years, and have used Kubuntu on it for more than a year. Ewan ko lang mga later versions.

Anyway, I'm sure when they get better funding, they can upgrade in the future. :D

This looks like a very good project. Sana nga maging very successful.

City Government of Surigao:

http://surigaocity.gov.ph/images/stories/foss1.jpg
The MIT staff attended an Ubuntu training with volunteer-trainers from the International Open Source Network, an information technology advocacy of the United Nations Development Program.

As of August 2007, the MIT proudly announces its conversion of 30 desktop computers out of the almost 200 computers in the City Hall. Spreadsheets with formulas and macros were also converted to open document format using OpenOffice.org Math. Although the transition is slow and a little bit hard, the MIT would push through with its migration project. Procurement of proprietary software like Microsoft Windows are withheld at the moment, unless necessary or the application that's going to be used has no alternative in FOSS. Meanwhile, those computers which are still installed with Windows were installed with OpenOffice.org, GAIM, Inkspace and other open-source software ported in Windows. This way, users become familiar with open-source software even before converting their desktops to Linux.

DSWD Bicol training on open source software completed 2007

EGAZPI CITY (17 May) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has successfully completed User's Training on Free open Source System (FOSS) and PC Linux to equip its staff and employees in Bicol the basic features of PCLinuxOS.

The training was conducted in three batches with the 1st batch conducted on March 19-24; batch 2 on March 26-30; and 3rd batch completed on April 1-17.

According to DSWD Bicol regional director Jim Rebustillo, the DSWD is the first government agency in Bicol to shift from WindowsOS to Open-source Software. Open-source software is a computer software whose source code is available under a copyright license that permits users to study, change and improve the software and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified form.

It is the most prominent example of open source development. The training included introduction to Open Source and installation of PCLinuxOS; Using OpenOffice.org Writer, Using OpenOffice.org Calc and Using OpenOffice.org Impress. A workshop on its features was the final activity completed by the participants on the final day of the training program.

CUENCA, Batangas -– In this picturesque town overlooking world-famous Taal Lake will rise a community e-center (CEC) that aims to bridge the digital gap in the country by providing affordable Internet access to the community.

Popularly known as "Internet ng Bayan [of the People]," CEC is a program of the Commission on Information and Communication Technology (CICT) under the Office of the President.

Since the computer units operate under Linux software Ubuntu, she said the target beneficiaries would have to be oriented and trained in it instead of the traditional Microsoft Windows.

good morning po. i used to be in the eSkwela Project Team. eto po ay project para sa out-of-school-youth and adults.

libre po sa community learning centers ang 21 computers, tables and chairs, 1 printer, 1 digital camera, site renovation fund and 1 year internet subscription plus module development ng ALS. yung sa four pilot sites, funded po yan ng AEF (APEC Education Foundation) thorugh CICT.

malaking step para sa amin ang gamitin ang edubuntu pero wala kaming experts para mag design ng modules on "Learning Edubuntu" or yung tipong "Edubuntu Inside and Out".

gamit namin yung edubuntu as the OS kung saan aandar yung eSkwela Learning Modules (Flash) and LMS (ATutor). maganda sana kung ma-harness namin lahat ng features ng edubuntu kasi designed siya for education purposes.

meron po ba kayong recommended readings for edubuntu learners? maraming salamat po.
