View Full Version : How many workspaces do you have?

Workspaces are something unique in Linux, some use them and some dont. If you use them, how many do you have on your desktop?

Four:

One - Firefox, Pidgin, other random stuff
Two - Thunderbird
Three - Songbird
Four - uTorrent Under Wine

four:

1) FF

2) Amarok

3) Pidgin

4) other: a VM if i'm not running seamless, gimp, OO, etc.

Under KDE I use 4 and keep them in a box but under GNOME I have three lined up horizontally. The number of workspaces I have is actually more cosmetic in how it looks on the toolbar than for functionaliy. Having the four in a box looks better on KDE while the three lined up looks better under GNOME.

I keep one open for general stuff (terminal, browser, media player). If I programming I'll use a new workspace for that since I'll typically have a lot of windows open. Sometimes I'll also use multiple workspaces for porn.

Four, one is for my internet browsing and for guides, two is for school, three is for image editing, and 4 is an overflow for any of the other workspaces.

I use two cuz I dont see the need to have more work spaces, on a separate note, i prefer GNOME and XFCE version of the workplace than KDE's cuz it doesn't mix the windows list of all workplaces

Er, I have four, but usually just use one. I just like to make the cube spin sometimes when I'm bored :-)

I have used up to 3 when I had a lot of terminal windows open with other programs. But that is rare.

As with nearly everything in KDE, there is a preference to change that.
Right-click on panel, click 'configure panel', click 'taskbar', uncheck 'show windows from all desktops'. And that is why KDE is better than GNOME could ever hope to be. :)

Oh, and I have six virtual desktops. (What are workspaces? ;) ) I don't assign any particular use to any of them, I just use them as I go.

I don't really need more than two. If I'm working, one for OpenOffice, the other for web browser. Most other things stay in the notification area (Audacious, Pidgin). Most of the time though, one is for full screen apps, the other is for smaller windows.

1: Firefox, virtualbox, ocassional nautilus, amarok.

I use them sporadeously, mostly because i like rotating the cube.

1. Evolution & Pidgin
2. Rhythmbox
3. Downloads > Deluge/nicotine+
4. Uni work a

6. Non work stuff.

working well so far, especialy with a hot corner setup for compiz expose and another for scale.

Four on unprivileged user, two on admin. Just two because I'm scared I'll leave something half-done if there are too many workspaces. Sort of irrational, yeah.

1. Firefox and Liferea
2. Shares on other computers/Music Player
3. Office/GIMP/...
4. Whatever carries over.

Just wondering who uses "None"

None would be for those weirdos who prefer a text based login, which I do about once a month when I screw my desktop up.

I have 8 on two computers using Synergy

Computer 1:
1: Misc.
2. High Camp
3. Other work
4. Personal

Computer 2:
1: Misc.
2. High Camp
3. Misc.
4. Personal

Now I only wish there was a way in Synergy to map workspaces to each other so if I go from workspace 3 on computer 1 I get workspace 3 on computer 2. If that makes any sense.

p_quarles
October 7th, 2007, 08:27 PM

3. Akregator & Miro

I did a little looking in Wikipedia, and the idea goes at least as far back as HP's VUE (Visual User Environment), an X window manager from the early 90s.

1) Openoffice
2) Web apps like firefox and instant messaging.
3) Ajunta, eclipse programming
4) looking at videos
5) video animation like blender or Qcad
6) configuration for linux and patches
7) spare for something I might need
8) Same as 7.

I use 8:

1) Web browsing using SeaMonkey, Drivel for my LiveJournal and Blog, and Kopete

2) Kontact is always here and is always maximized.

3) KWord\OpenOffice and usually Dolphin. it's my Writing workspace.

4) DigiKam, GIMP, and KFlickr. I do all my art stuff here.

5) Amarok, always maximized, and sometimes Audacity when I'm needing to record something, and KAudioCreator if I'm ripping a CD.

6) Web Development. Konsole, Quanta, Dolphin, and Konqueror

7) Games. Blobwars, Patience, KMahjongg, KMines, KSudoku, I love em all.

8) Spare workspace. Anything that doesn't fit in another workspace, or if I need more room in one of the others, will go here.

October 7th, 2007, 10:07 PM
I use ion as my wm, so I just add a new workspace on the fly whenever I need it. Typically I will have two or three open at a time. On my desktop, I'll have one for firefox and music, one for instant messaging and random stuff, and one (or two) for programming if I have a project I'm working on at the time. Oftentimes I'll do the programming on my laptop, and use one or two workspaces for that.

Here's the usual set up:

1) terminal or multiple terminals
2) firefox and sometimes vlc
3) whatever music player I'm using and whatever volume control thing I'm using
4) whatever else I working on at the moment

Currently I have 6 and I use each one for a different purpose.

Workspace 1: Firefox
Workspace 2: Pidgin (and sometimes, Skype), all other IM applications etc
Workspace 3: Banshee (and VLC for DVD's)
Workspace 4: Transmission (and sometimes the flickr uploader, but I don't use that much)
Workspace 5: Nautilus, pointed at my Home Folder (Quick access). I use this for data management (Transferring files)
Workspace 6: I am increasingly using the Terminal as I grow to learn how to effectively use it, I put the Terminal on Workspace 6 so I can quickly switch to it from Workspace 1 (Which I use most).

Soon I may have to add another workspace, strictly for Graphics.

For a while I was using EIGHT, just because I'd have multiple terminal windows, for xchat, pidgin, either amarok or audacious, thunderbird, firefox, and maybe a few other apps all left running. It was cool in a way, but it was way to inefficient switching between them (I mainly switch between them using Ctrl+Tab). So I cut it back down to four.

Only a compulsive multitasker really needs eight anyways.

I use four workspaces. Usually that is enough, but there have been times when I have gotten overwhelmed in apps. That's usually only the case when I am making somebody something in GIMP, have FF open so I can see what they need, Nautilus to keep track of all the new images I'm making, etcetera etcetera etcetera.

ONE: Everyday stuff (Firefox, Nautilus, Thunderbird, etc)
TWO: Nothing. Can be used when others are filled for more organization.

Workspaces are something unique in Linux, some use them and some dont. If you use them, how many do you have on your desktop?

Workspaces aren't unique in Linux. Any OS has them (even Windows, not ootb but still).

I use 4.

And I do mean use, not have.

1 for browsing the interwebs
1 for music (I use nautilus and totem or banshee, depends)
1 for terminals
1 extra for whatever I plan to do

I can't stand having more than 2 windows on the same workspace.

I use the expo compiz fusion plugin binded to the top right corner to quickly switch workspaces.

4 right now. Might increase it to 6 soon. 1 I use for web browsers and usually have a terminal open in it, too. 2 I use for multimedia stuff like a music or movie player, and also media management activities. 3 is for development stuff or graphics editing. 4 is for virtual machines. I have the Windows (Meta4) key on my keyboard plus arrow keys and number keys set to quickly switch workspaces. One thing I really wish I could do is to set up KDE so that certain programs always open in a particular workspace, which was my favorite thing about the Mac OS X implementation of workspaces.

I have 4, dual screen workspaces: Their use case will change depending on what I'm working on, and how many different things I'm working on at once. More often than not, it can look like this:

1-2: various terminals and casual browsing, casual applications use.
3-4: work with wine and associated terminals and browser windows.
5-6: VM's, VPN work, Citrix, Remote access etc etc.
7-8: Projects and hobbies (very light coding (not a programmer), scripting, Audio/Video, compiling, overflow tasks from screens 1 and 2)

I frequently use the expo and scale compiz plugins to manage the workspaces and windows within workspaces.

When I started with Ubuntu I had 2 but only used 1.
Then I started using the 2 and later tried 4 for a while, but it got a little confusing since I kept losing track of what I was doing in each one. So now I'm back to 2 and it works for me.
