I'm Zak, from Daet, Camarines Norte. I'm the one who requested this forum, being the LoCoTeam contact for Ubuntu-PH, after some good-natured persuasion from the community (in the mailing list and IRC.) :D I'm also the guy to contact with if you want large shipments of Ubuntu CDs (only with good reason, hehe. :P)

Along with Jerome Gotangco, Irvin Piraman, Aldous Peñaranda, Dax Umaming, and Juan Carlos Torres, we make up the team of recognized Ubuntu Community Members (e.g. the card-carrying Ubunteros with the @ubuntu.com email address.) And I want YOU guys to join our merry band of Ubunteros, to help out in Ubuntu development in various areas (packaging, documentation, translations, even training. ;) See http://www.ubuntu.com/community/participate to know how. :D

Among things other than Ubuntu, I dabble with a lot of technologies other than Linux; more recently my new job has gotten me into the world of Macs (just another UNIX, really, ;) Perl and Ruby application development (Rails and Catalyst rocks,) and grid virtualization (anyone playing with Plan 9 or Inferno here?) I also have been fortunate to work with OSDL (now the Linux Foundation) in last year's Google Summer of Code. And I haven't even worked out a college degree yet. :P

Anyway, enough of my babble! If you want more, just catch me in the #ubuntu-ph IRC channel on FreeNode. :D I'll make it a point to check the forums every now and then for interesting tidbits, too.

Matagal ko nang naririnig ang linux kaya naisipan kong humingi ng libreng kopya ng ubuntu at subukan ito. nasa plano ko rin na matutong gumamit ng slackware para masabi ko na isa na akong hardkore na gumagamit ng linux.

BSD is another kind of Unix. Karamihan ng mga UNC IT folks na I've heard of have their Unix courses based on FreeBSD. Same goes for Legaspi folks at Aquinas and BU.

from Red Hat, Caldera, Mandrake, Corel, Fedora, Mandriva, DreamLinux, Sabayon. and
now Ubuntu, at sa Ubuntu lang ako nag stick, kasi napakadali nyang gamitin, at ang
community support eh napaka husay.

At magmula nga nung nagamit ko ung Ubuntu, exclusive OS ko na sya sa bahay, wala kang
makikitang Windows OS na, until recently lang nung nag ka project ako na ang requirement
eh Windows application, so ung laptop ko nilagyan ko ng Vista at dual boot ng Ubuntu.
Hindi kasi kaya ng loob ko na mag install ng Linux sa vmware, pakiramdam ko eh binabastos
ko ang Linux.

Marami pa akong dapat matutunan sa linux, sana magkaroon tayo ng Conference or
seminars para sa ikakaunlad ng Philippine Linux Community.

BTW, Randy po, and programmer, however puros Windows development palang at the
moment nag aaral pa akong mag linux programming eh (huhuhuh), wala kasing oras.

Somehow naging fluent ako sa unix-based systems kasi ung thesis po namin ay yung tinatawag na MuST "Multiplatform System Utility". Gumagana sa Linux, Solaris, tska Windows. Open source po cya at sa ngayon ay out of development na. Hehe.

LOL..I'm fully aware of that, that's why I try not to call myself an otaku as much as possible (though I actually am one, and I've been called an "otaku" by a Japanese before, LOL). Even worse, an otaku has some connotation of "weirdo" in Japanese, as though it isn't something to be proud of (don't quote me on this, just my personal impression). Though I notice that the word is used quite loosely in other languages, so I think there is a difference in perception and connotation of being an "otaku" among Japanese and non-Japanese.

What the heck, as long as I enjoy my Japanese stuff, I don't care :D

..Now where do I get Japanese input support for my Ubuntu install!? XD

testing out ubuntu as my last installation of linux (gentoo, redhat 6) was years ago.. amazed as the installation was fast and drivers was installed just like pnp devices..

i remember back in the day na hindi supported ng linux kernels ang internal modems kaya bumili pako external modem :lolflag:

As for me the best benefit po is that hindi na kailangang mag-worry about viruses (from personal experience, 99% of computers in the Phils are infected with viruses). Aside from that,it's free and you can rest your conscience knowing that you are not participating in piracy (original Microsoft products are very expensive). I think the organization of Linux OSes are also better because they don't bog down like Windows over time (for many years I would reformat Windows XP every few months because of virus issues and loss of performance).

i found this part of the forum looking for a way to properly configure and connect ubuntu 7.10 to the net using bluetooth PAN. So far all the guides did not work for me.. :( Thankfully usb datacable + SE k610i did connect me to smart or i would have sadly gone back to windo...

Hi Jay-Arr here from QC using Gutsy under GNOME.

Medyo newb pako sa linux kaya naka-virtualbox muna ang Gutsy ko on top of Windows XP. Still waiting for the official release of Hardy tsaka ako mag-iinstall. First distro of choice ko was Debian but I was pulled towards Ubuntu kasi nalaman ko na mas 'hand-picked' yung packages niya, which I liked, yet remaining Debian-based! :)

The thing that made me wanna try Linux was a program called Aldrin. It's a modular music sequencer/tracker program modeled after the famous Buzz tracker. Hobby ko kasi ang gumawa ng computer-based music in my spare time kaya ganun...hehe

Anyways masaya ako na maging parte ng Ubuntu community! Mabuhay!
