these kinds of threads are very subjective. if you want to learn about audio and most importantly, quality, you might want to head to hydrogenaudio.org and start reading.

anyway, for my PC i use M-audio's Audiophile 2496 soundcard w/ Sennheiser HD280 pro headphones. all of my cd's are ripped with EAC > .flac

my home system? well, that's too much to get into and i'd rather not.

I have the 40 watt per channel Yamaha amp and Jbl speakers I bought in 1980. The speakers have been reconed but they sound fine.
I use a Lexicon Omega USB sound card.

I have a second identical sub sitting in my closet, still in the box. Nowhere to put it / lack of amp to power it.

Sound in Linux is far from on par with windows.
Missing features for M-Audio Revolution 7-1

No control of bass, like phase shift, redirection to/from sub - front/center.
No adjustment of distance to speakers. (Which is crucial).
No control of frequency range.
Lacking master/front volume control.

On the positive side, audio quality is actually OK-
Surround is supported.
If audio is routed through JACK, all kinds of weird stuff is possible. :)

I am quite optimistic that as Linux is gaining more acceptance with hardware vendors, drivers will improve.
