The new Oxygen theme is looking great on KDE 4.

Since Ubuntu uses Gnome, what is the planned response on Gnome for making it look better? Now with gutsy having compix fusion by default and standards being set by MacOSx and Vista, I honestly do consider the default Gutsy gnome theme to be behind the times for eye candy.

I don't believe that GNOME and KDE compete against one another

Oxygen may be an improvement, but it still doesn't look anywhere near as good (imo) as Tango + Clearlooks... not to many all the other Gnome themes out there.

Yeah, maybe a mod can move this into the new "Recurring Topics" section.

Oxygen isn't finished, let's just wait till the whole system falls together before we start passing judgment on a theme that has a long way to go before release.

The only thing nearing completion is the Oxygen icon set, which blows away anything gnome offers.

Possibly for Mac OS and Windows users, surely not for Linux users...

And the new Clearlooks theme is looking great on GNOME 2.20, which is already out.

Sorry don't want to troll but it looks like a win98. The theme is just outdated and the icons also. i have seen screenshots of much better looking themes and icons for gnome.

I have seen the Oxygen icon set, and that is mostly what I was referring to when I referred to Tango, which I think is vastly more aesthetically pleasing. I mean this probably just gets down to personal taste, but I don't like the hard-edged, high contrast, glossy style of the Oxygen set. Tango is much more understated and unobtrusive, which I like.

Sorry, I missed the fact that Oxygen was an icon theme (even though I previously knew it was); I was pointing to the GTK theme, which is unrelated in this case, and certainly doesn't look like Windows 98. Actually, neither does the icon theme if you ask me, but you're entitled to your opinion.

First of all - the Oxygen author does not maintain Oxygen theme - he prefer to continue his work on a personal fork of Oxygen - named Bespin ( Star Wars[The empire strike back] - was the planet where we see Cloud City [mining gas exploitation / home of Lando Calrissian] ).

the link for the Bespin KDE theme home : http://cloudcity.sourceforge.net/screenies.php

On the mean time Andrea Cimitan - Clearlooks maintainer - found a way to bring alpha transparency for GTK themes - take a look on his blog : http://www.cimitan.com/blog/2007/12/12/gtk-rgba-transparent-widgets-with-the-murrine-engine
this can start a new era for GTK2* themes.

On the other hand please check Aurora Engine, Aurora Themes and Aurora proposals on the gnome-look.org to see we are not in the back of KDE

and a proposal for the Aurora 0.4:

Ok, for now.
Later guys and girls.

May the force be with us ( Ubuntu/Gnome users) !

I really doesn't like all that polished mac/vista look. For me Tango/Clearlooks and some Cartoon Themes looks better. My entire desktop is comic and relax relax me.All that glossy blue themes make me crazy.Oxygen looks good on KDE 4,but i can't imagine Oxygen on Gnome. It will become very weird theme for most of the Gnome users.

I hate this saying so much. What about if I'm trying to determine whether I should use KDE or GNOME? Well I'll just compare the-whoops! Can't compare them! That's apples and ******* oranges!

How am I supposed to make a decision when every single bloody time I try to find high points and low points in similar things I'm told "You can't compare those! That's like comparing-no I can't even type it any more.

Stop saying it!

Just try installing them both. See which one you prefer, if either, and use it. Not a big deal. They both work. They are both functional, but they do things and present some things a little differently than the other. Not necessarily better or worse, just different. It all comes down to personal preference, so these endless comparisons are a waste of time.

I'm not sure which of the KDE4 threads to as this in, so I'll pick this one ;)

Can anyone explain what is it with the KDE SUPER CHUNKINESS I keep seeing in screenshots and even on YouTube?

Poss they are demo'ing on a low res screen, but it all looks so BIG and CHUNKY from the small amount of bits I've seen.

Is it really like this, or just the bit's I've seen?

Things like:

PiggiePaul: Yeah I had to set default size on Dolphin/Konqueror and default font sizes down, after that it looks good... Also those are fairly old screenshots from what i can tell, the first and last one are missing icons and stuff which have been around for a long time, and the middle one is KDE3.5

I agree that stuff is too big, but once you change font size and icon size in Dolphin/Konqueror it's fine for me. Of course the first thing I do when I install KDE is dive right into the settings and change everything to my liking, so obviously I'm not going to like Gnome, since it tends to simplify (and thus remove functionality from) the settings
