I am doing more research for KernelCheck (http://kcheck.sourceforge.net), and it would help greatly if you could post how you installed the fglrx/ati driver for you card (ATi binary/Ubuntu repository). Thank you!

For clarification:
ATi binary from website - ati-installer*.bin (or like)
Xorg driver from Ubuntu repository - xorg-driver-ati, xorg-driver-fglrx

What's FOSS?
Free / Open Source Software.
I just switched to ATI (from Nvidia) a few days ago. I had to get a new graphics card when getting a new Mainboard, and since Ati started opening their specs I want to support them. Running fglrx until the open source one is ready, using the one from the repos.

I use AIGLX, whatever that is.

I just bought a X1950pro to support the move by AMD. One question tho, which driver should i be using? Is the open source one out yet?

There is an open source driver out, but it doesn't provide as many features as the proprietary one.

Does it work? Whats the name of it?
I dont need 3d support, all i need is a working driver with all the video playback features working

ATI cards dont yet have AIGLX. That comes in new driver due this month within week or so. Very excited.. I use binary... Using xorg just until 8.42 driver comes out then will throw it on Ubuntu 7.10 and away I go with desktop effects etc. :)

so that binary one is better?

Technically yes... It unlocks way more features and a new one is released pretty much every month. An easy way to install is with a program using script called Envy. There is no Envy for Gutsy yet but there is for feisty at the minute.

xorg-driver-ati
Fglrx no longer supports my card (radeon 9250), my 3d performance might suck with the ati one, but at least is FOSS and works rock solid with Aiglx:)

Newbie question: how does one install the "xorg-driver-ati"?

Looks like I'll go with fglrx 8.43 when it's released. You can still vote!

I'm waiting on the default (?) driver to catch up, since I can't use Compiz without doing all kinds of CLI hacking. Since I don't really know what all that stuff does, and since none of the other driver options (including 8.42) gets me dual monitors either, I stick with the default.

I use the Xorg driver from Ubuntu repository. I had no problem with it and it's easy to install.

It was a nice surprise that on installing Feisty the open source driver for my radeon X800 card was automatically installed - however it was a bit buggy in blender so I used the Restricted Drivers Manager to install the repository closed source driver.
The only thing I would say is the Restricted Driver Manager is somewhat hidden away in the menus.
