Hi .
I'm thinking of starting to learn how to program, but I'm not really sure what program would be best to be able to use if I want to be able to make a career out of it.

You can start a career with pretty much every programming language, but really few programmers know only one. If you're puzzled as to where you should begin, take a look at the sticky threads in the Programming Talk (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=39) forum.

There are a bunch of sticky threads in the "Programming Talk" subforum that will be able to help you out.

As a cursory answer, I would recommend Scheme and then eithr Ruby or Python.
