I wouldnt take a crap on a dell. Awful hardware.

Based on personal experience, IBM thinkpad or a lenovo (same thing really). Solid, well built machines.

I wanna make 3D animations with my laptop

In that case I would look for one with a discrete Nvidia chipset and Intel core 2 duo cpu.

Discrete meaning it does not share memory.

I know it's not in the list but there's another vote for IBM here, my X31 works perfectly out of the box.

In fact it works so well it's almost boring. :lolflag:

Sony does make terrible computers. HP and Compaq are infamous for using bios that just refuse to work for linux and have tons of problems installing at times.
Dell is an option. Toshiba is one of the best laptop makers ive seen but their prices can be expensive.

You left out Acer which has decent compatibility with Linux along with good prices And another point, you might think ATI sucks now but they promised an Open Source driver with AIXGL support ( means very easy installation of compiz-fusion on Linux now, with very good performance ). So far they are empty promises ( they only released driver they did only supports cards so new they are not even on 90% of the systems ) but if things change ( its still likely that they will release a good driver for Linux ) you could regret not choosing on a laptop since you can't replace.

I have had a few problems with my HP laptop for a couple of reasons, I wouldn't recommend going with them to be honest. The DVD-RW drive works intermittently, and when I consulted HP they said reinstall the driver (how will that make a difference if it does it when it had XP on, Ubuntu, and did it before it had booted an OS?).

Also, the on board sound they use, its very strange, it takes over the system yet has no CPU usage. I haven't listened to music on it for a long time like I used to, but it use to stop my system from doing anything else for a while.

These two issues aside, for Linux its not great, but not bad either. Everything worked alright, apart from the wireless card, but the Broadcom BCM4318 is notorious for that anyway. The onboard ATI graphics were a pain too, only just in the past month got compiz working after owning it over a year.

From what I've noticed, very little has changed in HP laptops, so I'd still be wary of going with them, still use the same chassis in most cases, so can be quite iffy.

IBM/Lenovo seem to have a good reputation around here, so I'd say you are likely to be alright with them

I know this was not on your list, but if you can afford one the Toshiba Satellite X200-21K or Satellite X200-15K. These should cover all your needs and more.

Nix the toshiba since they directly support MS. Don't bother with Sony either. I'm not a fan of Dell, but would go that route if they were the only option available. HP, well, they are okay if you get one of the business models... otherwise they kinda suck.

My personal favorite... I don't have one. Spend the extra money on a small time Linux supporting company. That's what I'm going to do next time around for laptops.

Something else you might want to look at the is the T61p from Lenovo- I have a T61 (not p) that is solid as a rock on linux, and like an earlier poster said, works so well that it's almost boring. The T61p has a very powerful nvidia card, which should be more than enough for almost anything you can throw at it right now.

Oh, and thinkpads are significantly sturdier than other laptops I've seen- this is easily the best laptop I've ever owned.
