I've been using Ubuntu on a Dell Latitude C840 laptop for a month or two now. I love it.
My tower at home, crashes frequently. It's a powerhouse that I used to use for gaming+lan parties, but since I moved to an area where broadband is an urban legend, I have no use for gaming on it...although I do plan to get Cedega so that I can play some Counter-Strike:Condition Zero every now and then.

My hardware will be as follows:
MSI Motherboard
AMD XP2600+ cpu
going down to 512mb ram
Nvidia GeForce3 video card
mdp7800-u modem
D-link DFE-530tx pci nic

---
Forseen problems:
Modem/dial-up ISP. I have PeoplePC, and their dialer sucks. I will have to find a way to extract the local #'s that it dials and their settings to enter into KPPP or the like

Internet browsing-Sometimes I have to work remotely from home, and use a TSWeb connection to my office server. Firefox won't work with this...suggestions?

and i think that's about all the problems i have...hah! two!
i'll probably start on this monday night, since i've got gigs worth of photos i need to move off of that pc before i do anything.

Shouldnt have any problem with Kppp, thats easy.

TSWeb though...hmmmmm......Konqueror might actually run that....dunno though. Ever thought about GotoAssist or GotMyPC.....those run in Firefox no problem.

GoToAssist requires extra money. TSWeb is free. ;-)
Wine maybe?
The modem on my dell laptop won't recognize, and the only 'patch' i've found for it reportedly only runs at 14.4kbps,so i won't even bother downloading and applying it.

editing:
on further thinking (late in the day) i should be able to Kdrc or the like using the given public ip/path.

guess i'll have to try it out.
otherwise, no more working from home. hehe

Can you get VNC ports through to your work box?

If you can Term Svcs to it, you can use Rdesktop / Tsclient........
