Skype. Compiling and installing

](*,) I have dowloaded the skype file via Archive Manager in Ubuntu 5.04 (File Roller), however being new to Lynux I have run in to problems in placing the file in to the correct Directory and configuring.
I extracted the file using Achive Manager and tried to save this to usr/local/bin, but a message said I had not got permission. I have now saved the file to the desktop. Could someone advise how to proceed.
Incidently someone advised me the easiest way to install is from Synaptic and downloading the file in to the repository. I tried this but nothing happened.

Skype is proprietary software, it's also closed source, so there is no compiling. Since it's proprietary software, it's not in the repositories.

When you uncompress the file, there should be a file you run.

DJ_Max, thanks for your help. I managed to run the programme; thanks to your advice. However, I now have another i.e. that the Skype Icon is not saved to the Applications list. Is there a way of enablin this?
