Yeah i get those both under Mac and Linux,

Your computer has been scaned and spyware was found

F*** off no it doesn't since there is no *nix spyware, leave me alone.

Alt + F4 or apple + q usually sort's it out

Imagine this exchange taking place, it might explain things.

Site: Browser, identify yourself.

Browser: This is Firefox for the Linux platform.

Site: Firefox. . . okey. . . Linux. . . checking. . . sir, because you're running Windows, there is a serious problem with your registry because you said "Linux platform". I'm going to have put an ad on the screen which will get the message to your faithful user that some action must be taken to restore your system to stability. This is insane!

Browser: Yo', this is not a Windows system I'm working for, it is actually Ubuntu Linux.

Site: Sure it is Windows. Stop frontin'. I hate to do this, but I am going to begin setting up the pop up box right now.

Browser: Sorry, can't do that. Pop ups have already been banned from this computer, especially from your site.

Site: Too late. Found a back door. And I don't need permission to do that. :-P

I know, bad attempt at humor. . .

Exactly, especially after you do everything to block pop-ups from ever showing.

But, on the other hand, I haven't seen a pop-up blocker with a 100% success rate. I do know from experience that the one Firefox has is a lot better at its job than IE with Google Toolbar.

And. . . there's also the possibility that some will try to find workarounds. I've already seen a few of those over the past several weeks.

I can't complain. I've seen two pop-ups in Firefox in the past three months. I'd say that's pretty good. Of course, I also have the Flashblock extension installed.

I click on stuff like that on purpose just to see what my system will do with it.

most times nothing.

Sometimes I get a little wine or cedega popup, click on that, and then nothing.

I bet my Cedega install has all kinds of spyware installed in that directory....do I care? No. =)

Some of the newer pop-ups that look almost exactly like the windows gui are kinda scary. A lot of windows users might think they are real windows of an anti-virus/spyware program they have installed or something.

The funniest ones are the ones that say, "You have spyware on your system! Click here to remove!" I wonder if any of those would give you spyware...

I'd bet that they would, and always thought they would, so never clicked them when using windows.

Using Mozilla Firefox manages to spoil most of the popups somewhat, so I know that they are bogus... anyway, most of the time, the popups themselves will be headed Mozilla Firefox - etc....

Of course, a newbie windows user, will click on it, just like he would click on bogus links in spam e-mails...

But on Linux, no viruses, no spyware, we can rest in peace...

I also use filterset.G, and I preach it to everyone I can. It's great - no ads with minimal effort.

i use my own custom adblock filter + the tweak with userContent.css + flashblock... filters almost everything (then again, i only go to about 20 sites regularly, so...)
