MOD NOTE: if this is in the wrong section please move it as i dont want to violate the rules.

i have found a little free time on my hands and decided to help make everyones life easier.
i will make html documents with links to sites you request. in other words, since firefox lets you have 1 homepage, i will make u a file to set as your homepage that will have links to sight you enjoy visiting such as google, yahoo, these forums etc.

request form:

title:
links:

note: for the links you must have a full link, www.google.com not google or google.com this is so that i can have your request done ASAP. you can have as many links as you want, but if you have like 50 links it may take me a little while to finish your request.

after you have the file, move it to home folder. open firefox and delete the text in the address bar. drag the file to the address bar and release. then delete the 2 funny looking thinks at the end of it (if there are any) and then click enter.
click edit>preferences then choose set current page as homepage and you now have your custom homepage. if you feel i am taking too long to make it then feel free to email me ONCE not twice ONCE at:
non_existant_account@yahoo.com
if you email me twice about the same request i will block your email address and not make your document. this is to keep my inbox from filling to fast. the only exception is if the page doesnt work, in which case title the message: "my homepage doesnt work" or it will probably be ignored.
thanks and feel free to start requesting
im not charging to do this either, just incase anyone was wondering.

Opera does something like this with speed dial, but I think FF should too. I wonder how good you are going to have it look? This should also be moved to the community cafe.

Could we see an example of your work?
Also, if you're just making links to pages couldn't you just write a script and share the source?

I'm not seeing who you're trying to market this to, basically.

Yeah I think that we should create a stock flash file and destribute it.

That is if there is an easy free flash editor, I haven't looked as I mostly use liveswif on PC

Why wouldn't somebody just point their browser to

file:///home/USERNAME/.mozilla/firefox/XXXXX.default/bookmarks.html

and just use that as their homepage? Isn't that something similar?

thats the idea but this way i make the file for you... you tell me the links i make the file and upload it for you, you set it as your homepage and voula you now have links to your favorite pages

im planning on using basic html but if someone wants something more advanced i can do it it just will take longer the more complex it is, and it will load slower.
basically it will say:

QUICK LINKS (or sumthin like that)
google (google.com)
pspiso (pspiso.com)
youtube (youtube.com)
ubuntu forums (ubuntuforums.org)

get the idea?

Ah, you could write a program / bash script to do this for you very easily, so you wouldn't need to do it manually for each person.

If you're not very familiar with bash, it would be a great starting project to learn about it.

lol i drafted up a txt with 5 pre done all i have to do is add urls. i did this to help ppl who dont know html and dont like that firefox cant have multiple start pages. also if you only want 2 pages in example this saves loading time.
it just makes things more convenient for ppl.

Actually Firefox CAN have multiple start pages. Just enter them separated by a pipe ("|")..

You can also just open al the pages you want in tabs, and then in Firefox Preferences Main tab click the 'Use current pages'-button.. ;)

i could make something like that but then you have to memorize which number is what site. with links it tells you what it is

Not at all. Speed dial (which, as Onyros points out, is not only available for Firefox but has been for some time) lists the name of the site as well as giving you a thumbnail preview of the page. You don't have to memorize numbers.

edit: Added screenshot.

Even faster: the bookmarks page already provided by Firefox as mentioned earlier.

It would probably be right at the same speed, if not faster to load antisocial's.

my firefox bookmark page: 4 kilobytes
A basic HTML page with about 4 links: way less.

We're talking about a negligible difference, though.

good point, unless you have a very slow hdd it should load as soon as ff does since its maybe 1kb and is loading from hdd

but instead of talking about certain speed dial things that only allow 9 web pages, does anyone want me to make an html doc for them?

Wait, this isn't the Gentoo forums?
:)nope :lolflag:

umm excuse me but wtf is up with this:
