These are good stuff. =] You should make this a ritual of sorts, one interview a month or possibly even more frequent than that if you wish. I enjoyed both lots. Maybe even venture as far as letting the forum users post who'd they like to see interviewed and should said person be alright with it, interview them. Just a friendly idea, regardless it's fun to learn about the ppl behind the avatars. =p

Very interesting stuff. Look forward to reading more. I must say the sheer volume on this site is a tad overwhelming. Who was it that said; When everyone is talking, is anyone listening??

Clearly there IS a lot of listening going on within this site, but I'm sort of surprised none of our young savants have come up with a format set up capable of effectively sorting the tremendous volume and eliminating a lot of the redundancy. Hard to follow so many far flung topics, but I won't give up trying. :)

We're trying to pinpoint members who have dedicated a lot of time and effort to the community, so it might seem like most of them are staff.

In most cases people with the greatest influence around the forum have joined teams, moderate in subforums or are parts of other Ubuntu projects too. They're not necessarily "staff," but they might have a similar role (23meg (http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2007/12/01/an-interview-with-23meg/) is a perfect example of that).

I do try to balance it between administrators, moderators and "everyday" users. Devs seem rare and difficult to pin down, but they're on the "to-do" list.

The list for interviewees is quite long, by the way. So please be patient if your fave-rave forum pal hasn't been interviewed yet. We have all the time in the world ... :D

P.S.: I'm putting the interviews on pause until after the New Year. It's hard to get in touch with people because of the holidays. :???:

Yes, there's nothing to stop anyone from doing this sort of thing on their own. I know it's probably painfully slow and there are other people you'd prefer to hear about, so take charge and jump in there. There was even a thread around here somewhere giving anyone the chance to answer similar questions.

These are good stuff. =] You should make this a ritual of sorts, one interview a month or possibly even more frequent than that if you wish. I enjoyed both lots. Maybe even venture as far as letting the forum users post who'd they like to see interviewed and should said person be alright with it, interview them. Just a friendly idea, regardless it's fun to learn about the ppl behind the avatars. =p

1. Tell as much as you’re willing about your “real” life — name, age, gender, location, family, religion, profession, education, hobbies, etc.

- my name is Steve. I’m 23 years old, male, live in dover DE, I’m the first son in a biological family of four and an actual family of too many to count. I’m a spiritual person who enjoys reading up on various religions and don’t quite pidegon myself into one category but enjoy zen (buddhism in a whole), taoism, hermeticism, esotericism, etc., profession is retail for the most part, I’ve been to longwood gardens for education in horticulture and botany and have recently picked up a compTIA A+ exam. I can’t wait to get security plus and linux plus. I enjoy playing guitar and reading :) .

2. When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?

mid 90’s. mostly chatting back then. then tinkering. then geeking. in linux last year sometime. I couldn’t tell you why. I was visiting a friend in MD and he had told me he had installed Linux (fedora). I asked him if it was difficult to get used to and he said at first yes but that it becomes easier. I found out that it was free (!) and tried to burn an .iso but failed. I found wubi and used it for a little bit (last year) and then ordered my alternate ubuntu CD in the mail and have been running it ever since (linux, not necessarily ubuntu).

3. When did you become involved in the forums? What’s your role there?

I usually post when I have issues with my system. I read a decent bit about the terminal and the kernel and lightweight systems and such, though.

4. Are you an Ubuntu member? If so, how do you contribute? If not, do you plan on becoming one?

I don’t know what that is. No. I don’t see why not :)


5. What distros do you regularly use? What software? What’s your favorite application? Your least favorite?

I’m currently using Debian. I just hosed my OSs the other day. I am using apps you can find here). My favorite ap is probably my WM, either fluxbox or JWM. I don’t like heavy CPU hogging things.

6. What’s your fondest memory from the forums, or from Ubuntu overall? What’s your worst?

It just has to be the atmosphere. Everyone is friendly, welcoming (somewhat cynical to other OSs at times ;) ) and incredibly knowledgeable.

7. What luck have you had introducing new computer users to Ubuntu?

None.

8. What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?

I would just like it to maintain its open source policy. I would also like to see security be a main feature as well as its free policy. They are all the things I love about it.

9. If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?

Don’t hesitate to ask questions. It’s a different OS so you’ve got new waters to tread in but a quick look at this thread:

actually, it's not really quite as amazing as it might sound. i taught english composition for two years at the college level, so i had a very strong resume going into it. i figured that no matter where i landed i could fall back on that in order to get a job.

i also got really lucky and met some fantastic people who were instrumental in helping me find gainful employment. and since i was 100% committed to staying here, i never once second guessed myself. then, after three months, i was quite motivated by the fact that i could no longer afford to buy a ticket back to the states even if i wanted to.

Hi. As you might have heard already, I've picked up some new real-life responsibilities and as a result I find I can't afford as much time to this project as I used to.

I spoke with matthew and he agreed to adopt it, which I am sure will be a good thing. matthew's blog is syndicated through the Ubuntu Planet, which means the interviews will appear closer to the central Ubuntu community. That, along with matthew's position as an Ubuntu member, FC member and forum administrator, will lend a lot more credibility to the interviews. And I think that in turn will generate a greater amount of respect for the project -- and the forum community on the whole.

Thanks to everybody who agreed to be interviewed while I was in the driver's seat; the staff and community members who contributed thus far gave the project a solid foundation and an excellent start. And thanks to the people who read and commented on the interviews -- collecting them and posting them was only half of the project. The readers were the other half. :D

I don't think you understand the concept. When I was interviewed, I wasn't a staff. When overdrank was put on the list and was up, he wasn't staff at the time.

Many are interviewed who aren't staff.

Also, staff are chosen because of what they contribute to the forum, and being this is interviews with UF members, it makes sense that many of the interviews are of staff, or people that eventually became staff.

Your comment is also offensive, saying no one cares. Given the amount of responses on this thread and on the blogs themselves, people do care and find them interesting.

Come on guys lets play nice with the leggos :D Nobody here is intentionally trying to stir up a hornets nest or anything, I have been a member of these forums since 2006...I love this place. If you were offended about a comment then I think it would be more polite to take it up with the person personally outside of the general chatter area. We dont like seeing unhappy campers around here, but if you are unhappy about something said/done..then hey you have your freedom to speak up (respectfully). Play nice, try to get along..thats all we ask around here. oh, and if you can help out users, please do so. I forgot about that one (yes..golden rule #1 i forgot :() heh. Anyways im probably putting way too much into this and im probably not being constructive..so I will end my spill with this last statement. Ubuntu Rules!
