I am using Psi looking for other Jabber users using Psi.

Actually I am looking for Jabber users in general, I haven't been on Jabber for quite a while probably since last year?

I am using Psi on Elive Gem 1.0 and was hoping to talk to other Jabber users.

my Jabber ID is ravtux@jabber.org

add me to you list so we can Jabber.

For Psi users please post helpful tips here, Psi seems to be built for power Jabber users. Well I am not a power Jabber user yet I would like to be and hope to get better at Psi also.

Ok honestly, how exactly do you become a 'power jabber user'. I mean..... its a im protocol. Unless your actually diving into the code of it, there is almost nothing to know about it.

and also who cares what program your using when you use jabber or any other IM client. My friends who use AIM dont care that i use pidgin

Good points, being a new Psi user I would like to find other people fimiliar with this IM client, it's more from a functional perspective.

Sometimes I Psi, sometimes I Gossip :P

Gossip is horrible, but I've replaced the default icons with cool Jabber icons. The version I have doesn't support file transfer and is quite basic, that's enough for me, most of the time, though.

Psi is a great app, but it's really ugly and doesn't fit with the rest of my apps (mostly GTK apps), even though I have configured QT to look a little better.

Both are really lightweight (lighter than Pidgin, for instance), but Psi seems to have an edge on Gossip.

I'm keen on trying Empathy, though. For now, I'll keep Psi and Gossip, I like to have good alternatives around.

I use gajim since it uses GTK, my JID is reacocard@alpha-labs.net

BTW RAV TUX, look in my sig at the jabber link, that thread has a ton of JIDs already.

EDIT: just noticed you were first reply in that link, go figure...

ah I see. What about IRC? Feel free to stop by #reacocard on Freenode any time. (Yes, I have my own channel :D)

I found that while functionally Psi is great it doesn't look very attractive, and it is hard to customize, a friend request gajim which is built on Psi.

gajim is awesome:

As most may well know I was using Psi but found it a bit hard to customize, a friend suggested gajim, which even by default gajim looks and works awesome.

Considering they released a new version of the software less than 12 hours ago I'd say it's a safe bet to assume it's still being maintained. ;)

You're thinking of GAIM, Gajim is different (although probably based on GAIM by the looks of it) and seems to be focussed purely on the jabber protocol.

Ok I haven't used jabber for some time but tonight I decided to go active on the jabber network again.

So I went to the jabber website and looked at their list of suggested IM clients:
http://www.jabber.org/software/clients.shtml

Having used both GAIM and Kopete in the past...

Even though Elive Gem 1.0 comes with GAIM by default I decide to try Psi first....
http://psi-im.org/

I was very impressed at how fast and efficient Psi operates, but found the default look horrid and found it was not easy to skin:

talking to a friend on ##cafelinux (freenode) I decided to try gajim(not gaim or pidgin):

http://www.gajim.org/

reference the gajim thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=557698

gajim is completely awesome and by default looks and handles very, very good. It is based on Psi and is beautiful, but then upon reloading it later in the evening it became sluggish and broken. In gajim's defense it may be because I didn't remove Psi first.

Since it was broken I began to discuss this with my friend on GAIM, I remember using this in the past and am aware it is no longer in development but was still impressed with it. I mentioned this to my friend who uses Debian and he suggest I try Pidgin.

Well this wasn't an easy acquisition being on Elive Gem 1.0 that is based on Etch, so he walked me through on updating to lenny, I not only updated to Pidgin but also updated IceWeasel and a host of other programs.

So now I am a proud user of Pidgin and it works beautifully and is stable. Again I like gajim(not GAIM; all though I liked Gaim also) but it was unstable.

here is a screenshot of the about pages for Pidgin and IceWeasel:

Pidgin 2.0.1 and IceWeasel 2.0.0.6 on Elive Gem 1.0 (updated to Lenny instead of Etch)

My next goal is to revisit Kopete again and perhaps update to the e17 CVS builds.

gajim while a wonderful IM client for whatever reason become unstable and broken shortly after my excitement of using it wore off.

While Psi is very fast and light weight and stable it is not very attractive by default and is not easy to skin.

download source at www.pidgin.im

tar xjvf pidgin-2.2.0.tar.bz2

cd pidgin-2.2.0

sudo apt-get build-dep gaim (dunno if this will work for you)

sudo apt-get install libnss3-0d (dunno if this will work for you)

./configure

make

sudo make install (or sudo checkinstall to create a easily removable deb, you might have to fiddle with the version number if its something weird)

I've only tried Pidgin and Gajim, but from my experience the latter is better suited for chatting. One thing I really like about Gajim is its chat box, the one you write your message in. Initially, it is only one row long, but it expands as needed.

The only time I use Piding nowadays is when I need to talk to someone who's still using MSN.

You have to remember I am coming back to Debian based derivatives after using other systems for about a year.

here's what my repositories look like, some things I have added manually:

Pidgin does that, just not very well. It will expand to meet the need of the text, but when you send the message or remove the message it doesn't seem to return to its original size. Sometimes it doesn't even expand at all. It's weird.

Open your /etc/apt/sources.list, for every line that starts with deb, if there is not a corresponding deb-src line, add a deb-src line for it. Save the file, apt-get update, then do build-dep again.
