View Full Version : Save The Bananas

Enjoy bananas, frozen covered with chocolate, with breakfast, alone as a snack?

Enjoy them while you can because they may not be around forever!

Edible bananas may disappear within a decade if urgent action is not taken to develop new varieties resistant to blight.

A Belgian scientist leading research into the fruit loved by millions, and a staple for much of the world's poor, has warned that diseases and pests are steadily encroaching upon crops.

The problem is that the banana we eat is a seedless, sterile article which could slip the way of its predecessor which was wiped out by blight half a century ago.

Also from the same article:

The Cavendish banana now being eaten across the globe lacks genetic diversity, he argues in an article in New Scientist magazine, and its survival is threatened by:

Panama disease, caused by a soil fungus, which wiped out the Gros Michel variety in the 1950s
Black sigatoka, another fungal disease which has reached global epidemic proportions
Pests invading plantations and farms in central America, Africa and Asia alike. New Scientist compared the current threat to bananas to the potato blight which caused the devastating Irish famine of the 1840s.

This is a serious subject, the bananas could disappear as we know them, something must be done to save the bananas!

Rav, Rav, Rav... what will we do with you.

Time for a poll, I think:

A. He should be bronzed. Immediately.
B. Restored to full mod-hood and nominated for canonisation.
C. Sold off to another distro's forums via ebay.

feel free to add options!

I am concerned about the bananas too. Maybe they should switch to Linux to avoid the viruses.

Who was it that said, "Yes, we have no bananas"? Prophetic words, whatever their origin.

Edit: I like option 'A', but instead of bronze, we should use carbonite... ;)

I just did some online research on bronzing people and was shocked to find it is being done to babies - or at least bits of them.

http://ubuntuforums.org/g/images/167727/1_db_Deluxe-Casting-2.jpg

This should be stopped before it gets out of hand.

Isn't it bad enough that people make powder and oil out of them? But at least those products are useful. Surely we don't need to do this to defenceless babies just so we have some gruesome thing to hang on a wall. Write to somebody in power now and just say "NO" to bronzing bits of babies.

OTOH, its nice to know these things can be done if needed.

Why preserve the memories when you can just preserve the baby... Brilliant!

(It's a lot cheaper that way too )

I, for one, welcome our genetically inbred and sterile banana overlords.

It's like a dream come true! I can't stand bananas. They smell funky and leave behind floppy, stinky banana peels and I hate that they always end up in otherwise delicious "tropical fruit" mixes. Let's just hope we learn our lesson from the banana and stop this genetic monoculture before it spreads to mangoes or pineapples. That would truly be tragic.

I can't stand bananas.

Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a damn about Mangos. Bananas rule. They deservedly always take out the "Best Natural Packaging" award at the Fruit Oscars. Mangos are just messy. There should really be a Save the Bananas movement - we must stop the Japanese hunting them for a start - and rush to their aid when they accidently beach themselves (or am I confusing them with watermelons?)

D. Give him his own section in the Cafe (I'm thinking Rav's Table), and let him post all of his threads there that way I don't have to go hunting for them and I can check to see if he's made a new one.

The banana issue is not new, it happened before. What we know as a banana is actually one of over 200 varieties. The one we are used to is a "Cavendish" banana. The first popular banana was the "Big Mike", and was wiped out.

The fungus killing these bananas will eventually spread, and wipe them all out, baring a new development.

I did a report on this situation several years ago. The article predicted that they will not be mass grown in about 15 years.

i'm not worried at all.
there are over 100 edible varieties.
over 500+ varieties in the world. (some aren't edible)
Worse case scenario the boffins will invent a new sterile and cloned banana variety.
Maybe even invent a better tasting one! :O
or one that is capable of making good tasting fruit while controlling mad out breaks of republicans.

Can you imagine what would happen if the Ubuntu devs got together and tried to genetically modify the banana?

But nice idea Rav, we could have Ubuntu Bananas, "Bananas for human beings":D, that would really cause a turmoil in Microsoft since bananas are more famous than Windows:).

They would make Bananas easier to peel and eat (as well as clean up), but it would be up to the art team to make them taste and look good. :lolflag:

My mom taught my two year old nephew the "proper" way to eat a banana. Peel it. Cut it into pieces just the right size for two year old hands. Give it to him and tell him to "hold on tight, so that it doesn't get away..." Eat what squishes out between your fingers. :D

(Then send him to mommy or daddy to get cleaned up...)

Wow that's good to know, I had heard that all edible banana's were seedless and clones and that they couldn't breed with out human intervention because they were seedless. Basically if the banana as we knew it went extinct we would be stuck eating 5cm long full-of-seeds bananas that don't taste good.

Lets hope what I heard was just stupid alarmist hearsay.
