In my opinion it depends entirely on the task. Both have their place.

If I'm using a DE, I'll use a GUI app. It makes no sense to use CLI apps unless you're using a server install.

CLI, its much faster, efficient, and you can get more operations done.

Despite it now being 2008 I would say that both have their place. CLI for a server install or for fast execution of particular tasks which would take ages via GUI and would probably be more resource heavy. But if I'm just using stuff on a desktop install I would probably say use GUI. The other CLI advantage is the portability of settings between servers and different computers finch, screen, irssi and mutt offer a highly portable setup which can quickly be grabbed from an SVN repo and have you ready to work in moments.

I just use a GUI.

EDIT: I'm not actually sure if what I just said makes complete sense in this thread so if I just said something stupid just ignore it;)

I'd definitely use the CLI. I even use it for picture editing, movie editing, not to mention - web browsing. GUI - Bah Humbug.

I use centerim-utf8 since it has a lot fewer dependencies than finch and it behaves a little better with spanish acents and the ñ character (finch quits or does weird things)

This is quite cool.
Try NUI?
