I like to follow the Digg Linux (http://www.digg.com/linux_unix) page (including the upcoming stories to also catch interesting news that isn't neccessarily reaching the frontpage) and Arstechnica (http://www.arstechnica.com). Most important news reaches me through either of these channels.

Slashdot is more of an addictive substance than a news site, but it definitely keeps up with the Linux news.

Apart from that, I get feeds from Linux.com, Technocrat, Techdirt, and Groklaw. Can't remember which one carried the story you just mentioned, but at least one of them did.

I use many of the 'gadgets' for these sites and others on my personalised google home page, well the linux/computer tab anyway. At the moment I have the sites listed below. Some of these certainly aren't linux only but provide enough variety that there is usually something interesting in the bunch.
Lifehacker
ArsTechnica
OSNews
TomsHardware
Tuxmachines
LinuxToday
Linux.com
Slashdot-Linux
Ubuntu News
Planet Ubuntu
Ubuntu Forum
Ubuntu Geek

phoronix.com (http://www.phoronix.com) is also good. Sometimes a little slow on new stuff but generally well written
