I have ati video on my notebook and compiz fusion performance on XGL was **** poor: I hat to tune down all effects ( particles and such ) and remove all reflections.

Just wait till next month... no more XGL since they are adding AIGLX which means it should run superbly. I got it running on mine smooth as well but not really into effects atm.

NO, gutsy is already in feature freeze but I don't see why you cant do it afterwards.

I've got a P4 3.2 GHz with 1 GB RAM & ATi Mobility Radeon 9800 ... I've got the same functionality that you've got! Just wanted to let you know, you are not the only soul who had to get this uphill battle done...
