The moral of the story Our friend was willing to take an honest chance on Open Source. We did the setup and install, granted, but she claims her learning curve turmoil was nearly nothing for the Kubuntu distro.

Most Linux distros are still not ready for prime time. It takes some know-how to get them set up and running, but they are not the ugly and ungainly mass of command-line fear they once were. Things change fast in the Open Source community. If you have not looked for yourself in a year or two, give it a go.

This should be the usual caveat for any Open Source OS-recommending article. You simply must look around and do your homework first. Some distros are better at some things than others. Read the reviews.

For this Kubuntu install, we have to say: mission accomplished. µ
