FUD -> fear, uncertainty and doubt.
microsoft is all about pushing its weight around be it in legal and ethical or not. linus made a counter arguement as soon as this was imediatly out and said that he thinks m$ has it the wrong way around and just show us the code.

m$ hates linux because it gives customers a choice.

Why are you calling Microsoft "M$"? Should I start spelling Canonical as "¢anonical" or "€anonical" ?

Anyway... this is extremely old news. Sabdfl's said they aren't going to enter an agreement like Novell did. Microsoft won't even say which patents have been violated.

Yea, and either way, they wont dare go after anybody for the simple fact that when SCO tried to pull the same crap, it nearly killed them. Microsoft KNOWS they wont win, but they are making a big stink about for the simple fact that it will scare people who're thinking about switching.

Sorry most people (like me) called topics like this "what is the a joke" or something so it is inposible to know what has been said and what has not.

Didn't SCO sell Microsoft some UNIX code (see: <http://www.news.com/2100-1016-1007528.html>). I wonder how much of that got folded into NT, Win-2K, and XP? Now that the judge has said that SCO didn't own the UNIX IP (Intellectual Property) that it sold, I wonder where this leaves those companies who may have incorporated it into their OS?

Out of this entire debuacle my favorite quote is,

At the same time, Smith was having Microsoft's lawyers figure out how many of its patents were being infringed by free and open-source software. Gutierrez refuses to identify specific patents or explain how they're being infringed, lest FOSS advocates start filing challenges to them.

Or it could be interpreted as this,

We want to screw you over but we won't tell you how so that you can't change your software and make us look like fools.

Well, that kinda backfired. #-o

1. You have a copy of something I own.
2. You tell me that if you knew what it was, I would use something else.
3. I won't tell you what it is.

How the hell can I sue you for continuing to use it?

Microsoft needs to put up or shut up - Players in the Linux community might have a case for defamation of character...
