Marketing Ubuntu isn't easy. You'd think that it would be, but one of the major hurdles that we face in getting it out there is exposing non-techies to the idea of Ubuntu. Working with members of the marketing team, I've been putting together a project called ubuntu viral video which aims to do this.

The basic idea is to raise the brand awareness of Ubuntu by using the power of viral marketing. We’d like to create something like the www.firefoxflicks.com project, but for Ubuntu.

Contributors will be able to submit short films advertising Ubuntu which will then be voted upon by site visitors.

Are you interested in helping?

At the moment, we’re not looking for people who want to make videos (that’ll come when the project is up and running). Just now it’d be nice to get people involved in getting something together which allows other people submit their videos to us.

So, what can you do?

At the moment we have an offer from a couple of youtube.com like video sites who will help us to host the videos, so hosting is pretty much covered. What we need is

1) Techies. A front end which we can use to showcase the videos on like ubuntuvideo.com, and to display info to people on how they can get involved.

2) Ambassadors. Liasing with organisations like Universities and Colleges to invite them to create and submit videos.

3) Advocates. Are you a social networking ubermeister? As we get up and running we’ll need help spreading the word.

4) Marketing wizards. We need help creating guidance for project submissions.

5) Anything else. If you’ve thought of something I’ve missed, then please tell me!

Get in touch!

Please add your name to the wiki page (displayed below) if you are involved in/want to be involved in the ubuntu viral videos project. You can also get in touch via the marketing mailing list,

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam/UbuntuViralVideos

I believe that if this idea is executed properly, that it can definately make a difference. We need you!

You would get more exposer posting on YouTube, simple fact is more people will go to YouTube so why not utilize it as a marketing tool where 80 to 90% of your work has already been done for you.

Hi there,

We currently have an arrangement with a large video sharing site to launch an Ubuntu video portal featuring the videos produced. If you check out the wiki notes you'll find out more. The videos will then be linked from this site, embedded into a custom front end which will showcase the very best ones ;-)

ChrisProblem is I don't recognize anyone on the project for me to even consider it. I would like to see familiar faces that are more well known and trusted like: Jenda (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=17523), PriceChild, (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=43712) Vorian, (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=27198) Jono etc.

Well, I'm sure our loss is someone elses gain eh... ;-)

Alan Pope has been assisting on an advisory basis with getting this together, Nik Butler has written about it on one of his blogs and we have had involvement and advice from many people over on the marketing mailing list, without them neccesarily adding their names to a list

If you're looking for personal fame and fortune, this isn't really what the project is about, what's important is enabling other people to create their content and giving them assistance to do so.

I think anyone interested in helping needs to have those qualities to be honest.

Yeah, OK...Thanks; I wish you the best of luck with your project and I hope it helps the Ubuntu community out. ;)
