Eddie Bleasdale, open source evangelist and the man behind NetProject, has a new plan. Secure, managed desktop computing: Linux for the non-techies.

At the heart of the Trusted Computing Project is a £200 black box, about the size of those funny little Mac boxes, running a root-locked Ubuntu distribution. The user pays an annual fee of £50 for secure support from a proper Linux geek.

I have mixed feelings about this one. Root locked doesn't sound like a great idea to me. When you're dealing with children and cookie jars, you put the cookie jar on a higher shelf, not sealed in a concrete covered vault. There must some sort of special trigger to allow root priveleges.

I'd like to see a picture of this black box.

Best idea since since Linux Genuine Advantage (http://www.linuxgenuineadvantage.org/).

Seriously, if you don't want to control your computer, there are better options. Mac OS X doesn't even charge you a subscription fee. This is a silly idea.
