New Monitor Recommendations

The monitor I've been using with my Debian box seems to be on its death bed. When I wake it from a suspended state, it flickers and doesn't seem to achieve its full brightness anymore. In case it fails, I'd like to have a replacement on hand. So I'm asking for your recommendations.

I have only a few requirements:

size: It must be relatively compact. The current monitor is a 17" flat panel.
resolution: I would prefer no less than 1280x1024.
adjustability: It would be nice if it could tilt or be elevated.


Integrated speakers are entirely unnecessary, since I already have a great 2.1 set for that box.

Desk space is a concern, so I might have to go with 4:3. However, I sometimes use my computer as a DVD player. If I could find a 16:10 that fits on my desk, I would prefer that.

As far as price, I'd rather not spend much more than $200 US. I'm a student, and money is tight.

This NEC 17" (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824002121) is a very nice monitor (1280*1024, so 5:4) for $200 ($150 with the mail-in rebate). This (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824002122) is basically the same thing at 19" for $210. Both of these screens are glossy, so some people like them and some don't (they're best without any light shining directly on them since they can get more glare.)

This (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A0969612) is a good 19" widescreen, for $210.

This (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005098) is a good 17" square, at least as far as I can see.

Personally I'd vouch for an NEC model, but if you don't like glossy screens the ones I listed aren't the best choice. Of course, if you're not a stickler for particular visual quality in the monitor you can get a 19" for $150 easily.

If you have an insane amount of time and you're really into visual quality, this anandtech thread (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=31&threadid=2049206&enterthread=y) is the place to go. But most of the monitors listed there are big and expensive.

id recommend your look at the Samsung 940BW aswell, it is widescreen, if it will fit in your desk. sorry i dont know the best online shops in US cause i live in Australia. if you can fit it go widescreen the extra bit of screen is great to have.

Speaking of monitors.... i was in Office Max the other day and they have a 24" Soyo Wide screen Monitors for 300. It looked REAL nice. The thing is HUGE! I'll be getting it soon. It's the first part to my new system,
I figure I can at least use it while I'm building the other one. From my searching on the net and around it seems that Office Max actually has the best prices on LCD Monitors.
