Anyone any ideas as to a nice easy opensource or free stable backup solution for my grandad?
I just got him his first external hard drive and now we need a backup program for him. Ideally something automated would be good, although his laptop is painfully slow so it can't be a system hog.
I've had a look on freshmeat but it's all enterprise type stuff or a bit too complicated. He needs to back up his photos once a week when he plugs in his hard drive. That's all.
[And please, I know if I had him on ubuntu this would be a 2 second job, but I cannot switch him for a number of critical reasons so don't mention it]. Many thanks in advance!

Sorry, don't worry.
I just discovered he can do it through picasa.

Just a note even since you already have an answer... SyncToy. (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/synctoy.mspx) It's not open source but it syncs and backs up things just fine.

Have fun. Maybe one day he'll be a Linux user.

Cobian works very good, Open s. and free. http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm Ms Synctoy made a mess on my disk once.
