It's a strange and curiously rewarding experience to have to hack ubuntu on the command line via telnet. for a start it's a lot more forgiving. Case in point being the update manager GUI, which bombs out telling me that the downloads cannot be authenticated. Yet when you do apt-get upgrade it actually asks you if you're OK with that then carries on regardless. You tend to forget just how powerful and intuitive the command line is when it's all too easy to just click the icon.

There is a far greater sense of achievement that goes with being thrown back on your wits, as to why a given problem is happening, and the consequent trial and error hacks that eventually bring you to a solution. It's not easy, and certainly not "pretty" but then building a better mouse-trap never is.

Which I guess is a round about way of saying "thanks" to team Ubuntu and the myriad geeks, coders and hackers "out there" for keeping it real, so to speak.

There's no place like /home :)
