you should have narrowed it down to multiple protocol supported only.

Pidgin, multi-protocol support.

Used Trillian while was on windows before, just to have that feature.

Gaim for Linux, Trillian for Windows.

Kopete. I'm a KDE user so it's the most integrated with the desktop environment (address book, etc) I also love its extensions, and its hability to use AdiumX chat window styles, which are the most good looking ones.

As I see Pidgin is the favorite... for MSN it would be all right, but I need Skype too. Does Pidgin have Skype's protocol or something?

Pidgin. As well as being multi-protocol, it doesn't have useless extras like games, winks or nudges that plague WLM. I always hated it when my brother interupted my homework to show me some UFO.

I chose pidgin because thats what i use. I dont use skype because i cannot get my microphone to work on my linux box.

Emesene (http://www.emesene.org/) rocks! (msn only)

MSN for Windows

I run it in virtualbox because no Linux IM software comes close in terms of features and number of users... I'd love to go open source and use wengophone but its impossible to get people to make the switch when they are already happy with what they've got. MSN has some nice features.

i voted for pidgin. it's a slight improvement on gaim. i've only tried those 2 and kopete, but i didn't like kopete. it seemed quite limited and i didn't like the interface.
then again, i'm not really a fan of any messaging software

Well, since I an KDE user, I choose Kopete. But I also like pidgin, and I use it even on Windows, since I heard that MSN for Windows, was spyware.

I've been a GAIM/Pidgin user for years on Windows... so naturally I feel at home using Pidgin on Ubuntu as well. Only weaknesses... file transfer (it seems to work when it wants to) and no webcam support, but other than that Pidgin is perfect.

Because there is little difference at user level. It's a name change.

EDIT: KDE user, so Kopete.

Pidgin for the multiple plugins and protocols. I don't need voice on im and I refuse to connect with MSN protocol. I'm just a little anti-microsoft is all.

Jabber protocol preferred.

I had some problems with Pidgin in Gutsy tribe 5. It wouldn't display the contact list but on the same account in Kopete it would? Any ideas?

sstusick
September 13th, 2007, 09:44 PM
You mean the contact list displaying in one list for both accounts?

As far as that list goes, I vote for Kopete, but overall centericq ftw!
