Hello. I'm initiating a campaign called Spam them Back. The purpose of the campaign is to flood and report the spammers mail to the admins of a certain network. If you have spam in your inbox you are welcome to post their mail addresses here. Check this site (http://the-debugger-en.blogspot.com/2007/09/spam-them-back.html) for more informations about the campaign.
Cheers!
P.S.: If you think the idea is lame please don't flame :)

The idea sounds good, I would love to see a spammer receive 500 spam mails a day in their inbox :)

I don't feel like signing up to post a comment, so I will comment here: I think it would be great if you were to set up a mailing list and constantly add spammer emails to it, then allow anyone to spam that mailing address but remain unknown to the spammers (is this possible?).

So basically, thousands of people would forward the spam they receive to this mailing list and it would send it right back to the spammers, but add a filter that strips out any identifying data so that the email appear to come from this one email address.

Well, if everything goes well, they will receive the mails. And you know why? Because the email addresses posted on the blog will be scanned by no others than Spam Bots!

Good idea.

But as a matter of fact, Blue Frog already tried such a campaign (granted, on a larger scale). All they managed in the end was to really make the spammers angry, and after numerous DDOSes they were forced to shutdown.

But maybe you'll be more lucky.

One more thing: many spams use forged From headers, so I hope you won't end up spamming back an innocent unsuspecting user that did nothing wrong.

Just my 2 cents ;)

very very very very very very very VERY stupid idea.

No offense but you do this and you will **** lots of people off.

Most spam comes from spoofed addresses that have NOTHING to do with the domain server they claim to be from. You start spamming networks back you will be going against either legitimate websites that have done nothing wrong, or if you target the actual source, most will be botnets that have no idea.

There are organisations against spam, help them stop spam the RIGHT way.

I hate spam as much as the next guy, but spamming back is an insane idea it will only cause you lots of angry people.

:) find another way :)

I agree with curuxz, trying to send back spam emails to their supposed domain will not help anything, in fact it will just clog up the mail servers for everyone more than they are at the moment.
Please, please don't do it!

Aye I've thought about this as well, but yes its impossible. Most spam is from zombie-infected computers.

You will only run the risk of being accused of spamming yourself if you do that. Spoofed email addresses are the culprits in 99% of the cases (don't pin me down on the percentage though). Spamming back will hurt the innocent people, not the actual spammers.

I hope i did not sound mean or like I was having a go at you, the sentiment is in the right place and dont get me wrong I have thought about getting them back enough times my self. But it wont work and it will only get you in trouble :)

Personally I think the end to spam will come if we ALL use PGP signed emails, then configure our servers to drop any unsigned messages. Then you can get the key servers to axe keys that are bad and you have no more spam.

I may need to copyright that idea ;) lol!

Nice idea in theory, shame it won't work.

Just a little sidenote, if you're getting postal spam, the kind where they try to get you to sign up for something, and send an envelope with which you can reply... collect all your other postal spam and send it to them...

It's a low tech implementation of your idea :)
Read about this a while ago (I forget the source), and thought it sounded really quite funny :)
