View Full Version : Which OS visits your site?

Hi all,

This idea just spawned to me today as I was thinking of how, well, inefficient the linux counter website is. Because far from everybody registers themselves there (I did, yep)... fast forwarding half-hour ahead, I got this idea:

What if we figured out the "approximate", because it's still really hard to get the real figure, percentage of linux machines? I have a statscounter.com tracker on my website, that tells me everything from what search engine was used to reach the site / what resolution it was viewed at / what OS viewed it. The last part is the important one, since it sort of gives a rough idea.

So in this thread, if you own a site and have a stats counter in it, feel free to post the numbers (just for curiosity purposes, nothing else), and I'll keep a tally at this post of the total numbers.

Total numbers % percentage so far:
OS name # of OS's total %
Windows XP/2k/... 1,098,987 ~76.1%
Windows Vista 18,766 ~1.3%
Linux 15,078 ~1.0%
Mac OS 145,763 ~10.1%
Unknown 164,026 ~11.4%
---
Total 1,442,620

Data last updated: 10 Sept, '07, per post #22.

Note: All windows OS's below xp are counted in the xp/2k/... category, SunOS and others are counted as "unknown".

---

I'll start off with my site, and if you could, please follow the format:

- 80 Windows XP
- 10 Windows Vista
- 5 Linux
- 3 Unknown
- 1 Windows 2000
- 1 Mac OS X
- name of site (so we don't get duplicates) : vadi.missgaelyia.com

How couald someone get into the web with windows 3.1?I used to do it...back in 1993-8. I went straight from Win 3.1 to 98. It took some fiddling around, but it was/is possible.

What surprises me is that there are still people running Win 3.1.

So far this month:

- 497 Windows XP
- 24 Windows Vista
- 128 Linux
- 231 Unknown
- 19 Windows 2000
- 13 Mac
- 946 total (there's some from Solaris too :D )
- name of site (so we don't get duplicates) : http://blog.arjie.com

The 231 unknowns are spambots. For some reason they keep bothering me, I had to block whole ip ranges with .htaccess because I didn't know of a better way.

Are you adding all the numbers together? What if the same person visits two of the sites on the list? And aren't all these numbers going to be biased because we all like Ubuntu and will probably have sites that talk about Linux, no?

So as you can see, windows just has the majority, the rest of the traffic is primarily GNU/Linux with Mac's coming in a very weak 3rd place. That is for 13635 unique visitors over 6-7 weeks.

I just moved our neighborhood website (not many visitors per day), and in 2 days:

Windows - 4

Linux - 1 (me)

More interesting though is that all of them use Firefox, not a single IE user so far.

Where do I get counters for my site?

Vadi
September 6th, 2007, 06:54 PM
Yeah, I do suspect that'll be a bit offset by Linux blogs, but otherwise, most of the sites here are just normal ones :).

rsambuca - numbers plz? I can't do anything with the percentages only.

The counter I use is from statscounter.com if you wanna try it out. But it the free version keeps a tab of only last 100 visitors.

My blog is not a Linux blog, it covers many different types of post, mostly political in nature.
