2 questions, 1 a two parter
1.) Is it better to run with a window like that for wine? Would games run better?
2.) How do you do that with Wine?

1. Sometimes, it really depends on the game. Older games that have a low maximum resolution like 640x480 often run best in a window.
2. Run winecfg and go to the Graphics tab. Check the box for "Emulate a virtual desktop" and set the resolution to a minimum of 800x600.

Personally I can only run the GTA games windowed, otherwise they bitch about 32bit colour. >.< So I just max em out that way.

Actually, that is not a Wine command line option, but is an option for certain game executables that allow a windowed argument. It won't work for everything, it just works for those games that allow that command line argument.

Its like running Half-Life 2 with the "-dxlevel 90" argument; the variable is not a Wine variable, but is a hl2.exe variable and it won't work for other games.

AOL 5.0 on WINE and Ubuntu 7.04
:-P

If there was justice in the world, winehq.org would replace all of its uploaded screenshots with that one. Of a more stunning endorsement I cannot think!

1 - Supreme Ruler 2010, along with one of the reasons I like using Wine in the first place.

2 - Dwarf Fortress, GRAPHICS MAXED.

Scratches is a puzzle game so most of you probably have not heard of it.Splinter Cell works with new wine 0.9.44 almost perfectly accept the res you see is the highest it can go......but you can go to full screen and it is playable.

EDIT:I have almost every computer game known too man and I have no life......so I have more....

Castle of The Winds 2 (16-bit windows game, it is public domain thanks to the author)

Download link at the bottom.

Anyway, simple rogue like game, played it back in the day. Works like a charm in wine (unless you click the help button initially, just start the game and all is well)

hm yeah about that I forgot to add your going to want to add this in you Registry:

OffscreenRenderingMode = fbo

under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D

otherwise the games going to look very ugly and lighting is going to be all screwed up.

This thread's a bit of an oldie, I know, but I'm so happy I got Diablo2 LOD to work in Ubuntu, I thought I'd share it with you.
It actually looks kinda cute windowed, I think I'll play it like that ;).

EDIT: I don't know what those white stripes are, it looks normal in my screen.
