Hey all. I was visiting my states website today and noticed some icons used in ubuntu (possibly originating from gnome or open office). I was wondering if they are being used legally. I do not really know how to track them down to find out what kind of a license or copyright they are under. I don't know many specifics about this. Here is the first page i noticed.

If they are violating something I would like to be able to notify them so it can be corrected.
what do you think?

i think they're creative commons liscened. that means anyone can use them. if it was the ubuntu logo itself then that might be a different story.

I think insane is right. Maybe.

I mean, I've seen those icons in other distributions too - it's a GNOME thing, right?

Those are not Gnome Icons.
They are from the Tango-project.
I'm not to sure if that is legal.

They can use them if they attribute the icons to their owners, I'm gonna just send them an email saying they should attribute them since I can't find it, problem should be solved?

The Tango Icon website:
The color palette is public domain. The actual icons are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/).Only thing is they really should perform
Attribution. You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work). - drop them an email explaining.

Tango icons aren't desktop only. :)

Tango project? My bad.

Well, you're not entirely wrong with the Gnome thing. Didn't the Tango project do most of the work on the now Gnome icons?

I sent them an email containg the Creative commons license page, the Tango homepage and the page on their site that contained the images and explaining that they need to attribute the icons to the Tango project

So I have a question about the Ubuntu logo... Is that created under any copyright?

I just created this business using Ubuntu as the operating system and the Ubuntu logo seems to be a good base for my own logo.

That should be enough information about the logo.
