View Full Version : This is why I will never have a cam in my home

So I was bored at work today and just checking out random network cams. Most of them are deliberately available for public viewing and they limit the amount of access John Q. Public can have. But then I ran across one that was installed by someone who apparently doesn't know the first thing about security.
This cam is installed inside his home and offers a view of his living room and this little corner where all his computer crap is. I'm pretty sure he'd be upset to know that I saw him walking around in just his underwear.
Is there a way to find out who this cam belongs to or inform him that he might want to look into locking down his system a little better? Whois didn't turn up any results and I feel bad for the guy.

I don't understand. How exactly did you access this?

It was just sitting there in a google search. With all the rest of the publicly available cams.

that means that he purposely set it up so people on the internet can see it. If you just plug a web cam into your computer, people cant just view it randomly. You gotta set it up with some program first.

I'm not so sure about that. This is the camera he has and apparently he skipped a few steps, like setting up a password.

There were a few other links that came up on google but required a password before showing anything.

Scarlett, I am sure that this person is fully aware their webcam is broadcasting.

Well, if that's the case then I'm truly disturbed.
But he doesn't act like someone who knows he's living in a fishbowl. I can see his computer desktop, the book he sat there and read for a little while, the tv channels he flipped through and the sandwich he ate. He wasn't doing anything provocative or even terribly interesting. He's an old guy. Maybe he's just a little computer illiterate.

Maybe it's a new kind of malware, the Candid Camera Virus.

LOL. They had net cams in 96? I didn't even own a computer back then.

I remember seeing someone posting something that you could type in google to find unsecured web cams. At least a few brands of net cams are setup by default to be open to the internet. If the user doesn't add a password or anything to secure it, then anyone can find and use it.
I'm sure most of the people who set these up just plug and play and never realize that other people can see it. They know little to nothing about network security, otherwise they would surely have at least added a password.

Plug this into Google:
axis-cgi/mjpg/video.cgi
That will get bazillions of links to axis cameras.

Yeah, I've seen this before. There are even cameras on google that you can control from your computer, the control interface is over the net. Not sure how to search for it because the last time I saw it was from a link on another site. I think it is probably mostly computer illiterate people who do not realise that they are wide open - much the same as the way you can find loads of music collections on ftp servers with a simple google search ;)

Just paste any one of those into a google search. It's voyeuristic goodness, but by and large they're meant to be for public viewing.

You would think the cam came with instructions at least. Either that, or this is just proof of the axiom that some people have more dollars than sense.

There's really people in 2007 that have not heard of the MILLIONS of personal web cams people set up just to show their day to day life on the net? Wow!!!!
Check these sites, look for the "personal" cams, and there you go!!!!

Nonononono... this is totally different. This isn't nerdcam or sexcam or watchthepaintdrycam. This is someone's personal security cam that he just neglected to lock down. It's listed as "networkcam". He never even changed the default name.
I went there again today... I can't help it, I'm weak. And I still really want to figure out who this guy is. I could see some bills lying beside his computer but he went with the cheap model that doesn't have zoom capabilities and I couldn't make out the name. The view of the tv is way too bright to make out any words or images so I can't even tell what city he's in when the news or station Identifications come on.
The thing he bought is only $200 and the default position is staring at his front door. I's just a home security thing. Except that it's not really secure. (Incidentally, he does have a really pretty cat.)
Does anyone know how to find out who this guy is based on what comes up in my URL when I go there?

Pretty sure. Because this is boring.
Out of respect for the guy's privacy, (and possible legal consequences), I wasn't going to give the URL, but since he seems to have hung up a shirt or something in front of the cam, and because most of you think this is deliberately public anyway, here you go...
[deleted]
His home looked pretty messy so I get the distinct impression that housecleaning wasn't a priority. So this shirt, or whatever, may be hanging over the cam for quite a while, but I assure you, there's a very unaware, computer illiterate, old guy on the other side.

You might try and mail to Viewnetcam.com. They are his dynamic DNS provider. In order to use that service, you have to register. Apparently, you also have to give your e-Mail address.
His user name appears to be druidphilip.
If you send them a mail, they could perhaps make him aware of what he is doing. It is even possible that he is violating their conditions for using the service.

OK, I finally had time to check out the cam. Scarlett, this is very common. For some strange reason this person wants to be seen on the web.

Agree. He also has links on his home page to both web cams in his home and several links to web cams at his place of work.
I wonder if his (?) woman has consented?
