What is a good Idle Temp for a Pentium D 940 with a Masscool Heat Sink? I love my current setup and think it does a great job. Right now 43 Celsius running XP with Outlook, RealPlayer, and Firefox open. Will drop down to 40 after a while with no activity. I've seen some folks complain about high temps from this CPU, but I honestly never had a huge problem with it. I've seen the claimed Idle Temp extremes go from 23 Celsius to 57 Celsius.

Anyone have a 940 that they'd care to comment on?

FWIW, it hits around 54/55 C under load and I have the Shutdown Temp in BIOS at 60 C. Highest I've ever seen it go was 58 and I was seeing how far I could push it (multiple apps opening at same time).

My normal one-bump only.

My dual core opteron runs around 35 C when idle, and around 51 C when at full load (both cores in 100% use).
Then again, that's an AMD processor. I think it is different for intel processors.

Yes. AMD's are known for their lesser power consumption, hence lower temps.

I was actually down to 39 C this morning, but I changed a lower intake fan to an upper exhaust fan last night. Still, 35 is very nice :)

Newer AMD's run cooler. ;) My Athlon XP 2800+ runs 38C idle (with athcool installed) and up to 60C when at 100% CPU load.

Touche :)

Currently at 41 C. Must be nice to idle in the 20's...

I use Pentium D 945, well... maybe this one little similar with your 940 :)

I'm using the standard fan.
Idle: 45 - 48 C
Full Load (both cores) : 55 - 61 C

Couple weeks ago I opened the heatsink in order to clean out the dust, but it seems I didn't re-attached the heatsink properly so the temperature goes up to 80 - 85 C.
Now it fixed, so check if your heatsink is attached properly, to get a proper cooling :) .
