View Full Version : Do you have a linux related blog/website?

July 20th, 2006, 09:34 AM
Hi all.
I have noticed that a lot of forum users have their own blogs and websites, and thought that it would be nice to have them all listed in one place. If you post your link, i'll keep an eye on the thread and update the list. (original thread by Derek Djons (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=219007))

EDIT: They don't have to be Ubuntu/Linux related, I will not however include a blog that is pornographic, racist or otherwise offensive, as the moderators may lock the thread.

Probably a sort of aggregation of Ubuntu/Linux related blogs owned by Ubuntu community members? Something like PlanetUbuntu, except the blogs are not written by the developers.

EDIT: I have also started my own blog, but I'm not keen on advertising it for now, at least until I get some "good" Linux/Ubuntu posts. It also contains non-Linux related material that Linux users might not be interested to know. (they might be expecting a pure Linux-related blog, and mine isn't :D)

EDIT: (July 24, 2006 02:57 UTC)
Just wanted to put in some corrections and additions, since richbarna hasn't been around for a while.

Hi fenyx, Linux related or not, I just wanted a list of blogs/webs from our community. I like a good read, and I thought it would be good to read stuff that is written by people we kind of know.

So come on !! Give us the URL :)

EDIT: I used Blogger because it was easy to use, but I have noticed that the Word Press layout looks nice.

There are numerous rants about the forums and events inside them. Some people running these forums would not be happy about my venting. So, I will refrain from linking to it.

I'll wait until the list grows a bit, and then i'll edit it with different headings.

Your blog looks GREAT! I love those transparencies.

How did you do that?

It's clever manipulation of the background image. There's actually two different backgrounds, one being darker than the main one, that's used for the boxes. It makes it look transparent. I've used CSS properties to fix them both in place so they sync up. Kinda hard to explain, but here's the CSS:

I have added a link to my blog in my signature.

Here's the direct link to the recompiled list: http://jucato.wordpress.com/ubuntu-users-blogs/

EDIT: Sorry I have no digg account, so publicity through my blog would be very minimal, for now. (I do have plans of stepping up on the publicity ladder :D)

Jozef, I'm experiencing some problems with your blog, both in Konqueror and in Firefox. But it might just be on my side.

For one, the side bar doesn't go all the way to the top. It's somewhere midway down the page. Also, the blog link on the top bar links to a blank page. No blog entries.

Maybe I'm just not used to this layout. Do all Multiply pages have this lay out, or am I free to make my own? (Still interested in trying out Multiply. :D)

the blog entry tab does go to a blank page, this may be becuase I set all my blog entries as favorites and they are on the front page. I will adjust this.

You can make your own layout. This is just one of the templates they had.

not sure about the sidebar, I will look.

@Klaidas: AFAIK, in Wordpress, you can make a Page (in the Wordpress meaning of the term), and make that your default front page, so you could probably have a front page that have links to your photo gallery and to the main contents of your blog. Or you could make/edit a Page (the About is already there by default) which would include a link to the gallery plus some descriptions.

I just discovered that the premium service on Multiply that they used to charge for is free now!

pretty damn awesome!

Here is a little 411 about multiply:

What does this mean?... unlimited free storage of music, videos, photos, blog material, all this with an integrated forum for each and every blog entry, song uplaoded, etc.

http://images.multiply.com/common/arrow-down.gifIs there a limit to the amount of stuff I can post on my Multiply site? (http://javascript%3cb%3e%3c/b%3E:toggle_faq%28240%29)
No, there is no overall limit to the amount of stuff you can upload to your Multiply site.

If this didn't answer your question, please contact us. (http://multiply.com/info/inquiry)
http://images.multiply.com/common/arrow-down.gifDo I really get unlimited storage for free? (http://javascript%3cb%3e%3c/b%3E:toggle_faq%28245%29)
Amazingly enough... Yes!

If this didn't answer your question, please contact us. (http://multiply.com/info/inquiry)

http://images.multiply.com/common/arrow-down.gifWhat kinds of music files can I share? (http://javascript%3cb%3e%3c/b%3E:toggle_faq%2857%29)
You can upload the following types of music files to your Multiply site: mp3, m4a, wma, wav, aac, ogg, aif and au. Please be aware that sharing someone else's copyrighted music is illegal and prohibited on Multiply, per our Terms of Service.

If this didn't answer your question, please contact us. (http://multiply.com/info/inquiry)

http://images.multiply.com/common/arrow-down.gifCan I cross-post my blog entries between Multiply and another blog site? (http://javascript%3cb%3e%3c/b%3E:toggle_faq%2862%29)
Yes, we offer cross-posting (posting a single blog entry to Multiply and another blog site at the same time) between Multiply and three other blog sites:
LiveJournal
Blogger
TypePadWhen you enable cross-posting, Multiply can automatically detect new entries you've written on one of these sites and post them on your Multiply site as well. And when you post a new blog entry on Multiply, we'll automatically post it on your LiveJournal, Blogger or TypePad site (unless you explicitly choose not to when posting the new entry). Even with cross-posting enabled, you can choose to prevent a specific entry on your other site from being cross-posted on Multiply. Just add the following code to your entry on the other site: <!-- multiply:no_crosspost -->
You can enable cross-posting the next time you import new entries from one of these sites. Just click on Post at the top of any page, select Write in Blog and select the service from which to import new entries and enable cross-posting for future ones.

If this didn't answer your question, please contact us. (http://multiply.com/info/inquiry)

http://images.multiply.com/common/arrow-down.gifLooks like I can share certain content with Everyone, Network or Contacts. What's the difference between those options? (http://javascript%3cb%3e%3c/b%3E:toggle_faq%28360%29)
Everyone - Sharing something with everyone is the same thing as putting it on a public web site. Anyone who visits your site will be able to see it, including people outside of Multiply. The post could also show up in search engines such as Google, Yahoo and others. If you share something with "Everyone", a notification will be sent to everyone in your Network (not to every Multiply user).
Your Network - Only the people in your network, which includes all your contacts plus their contacts and beyond, will be able to see what you shared. See the "What is my network" question for more info.
Your Contacts - Only the people in your list of contacts will be able to see the content you're sharing.
Individuals - You can choose this option if you just want a small group of specific people to be able to see what you're sharing.

Woah !! That IS awesome ! But one thing, how will they be able to "legally" store all those mp3's? There is no way that people are going to upload legitimate copies. With the crackdown on torrent sites (that only have links), this smells fishy to me.
I wonder if they log IP addresses. Imagine if everybody uploads all there video and music collection, that there's some pretty incriminating evidence of piracy.

Cheers Fenyx, I read it. And I don't like this part :-

You agree not to use the Multiply Web site as a door or signpost to any other home page or as a vehicle for remote loading. Examples of remote loading include providing, on another web site, a direct link to a video or music file hosted on the Multiply Web site and/or providing a link from another web site to the Multiply Web site with instructions on how to play a specific video or music file hosted on the Multiply Web site. Accordingly, we reserve the right to limit the number of times and/or the frequency with which any video or music file hosted on the Multiply Web site can be downloaded and played.

*sigh* Could have been a good accessible option for media files :(

With that said I never expereinced any limits, I think they posted that just in case their user base became to huge for their servers?

But on the legality of video and music uploads, I haven't used the video feauture at all, but I am sure sleepy kittens isn't infringing any thing.

As far as music goes I have loaded songs but I mainly tested it, I thought this would be nice as a storage option but as far as I know it doesn't have a mass upload ability.

With that said I will now change the authorization to private so only I can pull it up or delete it. I honestly don't use it.

@richbarna: I think it's only natural that they have that part. Most free web hosting service do. It's just there to make sure that you don't use their services just for online storage. Maybe they'll change that in the future to something like PhotoBucket's or ImageShack's, where you can hotlink to an image but only a smaller version is displayed, and you have to click on it to view the full image, at which point you are directed to the side (PhotoBucket/ImageShack).

err... I hope they develop some more fur...
2 breeds of cats I can't stand: Persian (just a big ball of fur) and Siamese (almost no fur at all). :D

Thats why I thought the Sphinx would be prefect for you since your asthmatic.

The Sphynx (aka Canadian Hairless) is a rare breed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_breeds) of cat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat) with extremely little fur, or at most a short fuzz over its body, and no whiskers (vibrissae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibrissae)). Their skin is the color their fur would be, and all the usual cat marking patterns (solid, point, van, tabby, tortie, etc) may be found in Sphynx too. They are sometimes mistaken for Chihuahuas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chihuahua_%28dog%29) because of their extremely unusual and, some say, uncatlike appearance. They are very affectionate and extroverted and like to cuddle with their humans, other humans, and each other.
Delicate as they may appear, Sphynx tend to be well-muscled and robustly healthy, with a few obvious weaknesses. It is essential to keep a sphynx cat warm and free from drafts, especially during kittenhood, as they have no more protection from cold than a naked human would. Sphynxes are also prone to sunburn and sunstroke because they lack the normal protection of fur. They tend to get dirty and greasy, since their skin produces the same oils as a fully-furred cat, but the oil is not spread over fur as usual. As pets they are notably more social than "normal" cats, and happier to be handled, but also require more maintenance including weekly bathing and ear-cleaning. Their natural bathing habits tend to be ineffective on skin, so the owner must compensate a bit.
Sphynx cats are not hypoallergenic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypoallergenic)[1] (http://www.ankhamun.com/Hypoallergenic%20cats.htm), in fact they can be even worse for severely allergic people than furred cats. But because they don't deposit hair on furniture or clothing, they tend to be easier to clean up after, and therefore often less troublesome to mildly allergic owners. Some notice symptoms but handle it by bathing and cleaning them slightly more often than one would otherwise.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)]
The Sphynx breed is known for a sturdy, heavy body, a wedge-shaped head, and an alert, friendly temperament. Although hairless cats have been reported throughout history (hairless cats seem to appear naturally about every 15 years or so), and breeders in Canada have been working on the Sphynx breed since the early 1960's, the current American and European Sphynx breed is descended from two lines of natural mutations:
Dermis and Epidermis (1975) from the Pearsons of Wadena, MN, USA and
Bambi, Punkie, and Paloma (1978) found in Toronto, ON, Canada and raised by Shirley Smith.Other hairless breeds might have different body shapes or temperaments than those described above. There are, for example, new hairless breeds, including the Don Sphynx (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Sphynx) and the Peterbald (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peterbald) from Russia, which arose from their own spontaneous mutations. The standard for the Sphynx differs between TICA and FIFE.
Sphynx hairlessness is produced by an allele (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allele) of the same gene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene) that produces the Devon Rex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon_Rex), which has only one of the usual two fur coats. The Sphynx allele is incompletely dominant over the Devon allele; both are recessive to the wild type. Sphynx were at one time crossbred with Devon Rex in an attempt to strengthen this gene, but unfortunately this led to serious dental or nervous-system problems and is now forbidden in most breed standards associations. The only allowable outcross breeds in the CFA (http://www.cfainc.org/) are now the American Shorthair (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Shorthair) and Domestic Shorthair (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_shorthair_cat). Other associations have different rules. In Europe mainly Devon Rex has been used for outcrosses.
A well-known Sphynx is SGC Belfry Ted Nude-Gent (http://www.junglexotics.com/ted.htm) who is in the Austin Powers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_Powers) movies. He plays the part of Mr. Bigglesworth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Bigglesworth), Dr. Evil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Evil)'s cat.
