I think I thought the same thing, it is interesting learning where they got the name from also... ;)

Supposedly, the Starbucks logo is a siren, from Greek mythology. And the name is based off of the first mate in the book, Moby ****, which I supposed since the original owners were English teachers, they probably liked the book or something (just speculating on that). Wikipedia has everything you wanted to know about Starbucks and some things you didn't at the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starbucks

Other than that, Starbucks is pretty much the Microsoft of coffee. :-o

I worked as a barista at Starbucks for almost 3 years. That was exactly the story I was told during my training, except for the owner being an English teacher. I don't even know if Howard Shultz (we all called him Howie and had a direct number to his voice mail) is still the president (it's a privately owned corporation, not a private enterprise), but what we heard about him is that he went to Italy and fell in love with the coffee there and was determined to recreate something similar in the states.

While I can admit I'm partial to Starbucks because it one of the best jobs I've ever had, I've also tried to keep an open mind to other coffee houses. There is no roastery nearby that I'm aware of so I'm pretty much stuck with Pete's, Coffee Bean, Jean's and whatever mom&pop coffee shop I run across for comparison. But having sampled all of those, I'd still have to say that Starbucks pulls the best and most consistant espresso shots. I'd hardly call them the Microsoft of coffee.

They also treat their employees better than most corporations. Since I've graduated college and attained a professional job I've never had benefits that equals what they offered. They offered complete health, dental, optical, 401k and stock options. And that was for 20 hours a week. When I left, they were considering psychological and chiropractic coverage. They were also one of the first major businesses to offer domestic partner insurance before it was required by law. And of course, the pound of beans to take home and as much caffeine you could suck up while on the clock was nice too.

I know people love to hate large corporations but Starbucks really is one of the decent players.

You obviously didn't read the link:
http://www.endicott-studio.com/jMA03...heMermaid.html (http://www.endicott-studio.com/jMA03Summer/theMermaid.html)

Everything you need to know is there, why spam the Wikipedia link? ;)

I would say that Starbucks is the McDonalds of the coffee world, or Dairy world would be more appropiate since they sell more dairy products then coffee.

Honestly I just read the wikipedia article and it reads like a Starbucks® ad.

It speaks nothing of the controversaries around Starbucks®; Wikipedia has become ads with notability, unfortunately.

Great read.

I've never even gave the Starbucks logo a first thought at all.

I am a barista for Starbucks at the moment (in fact, posting this before I gotta go to work! lol). When you're hired you have some five hour class you go to, to learn about Starbucks history... The logo is a Siren, but it's been... modified from the original one. One of the originals had the Siren showing her breasts or something, and then for an anniversary event or something like that, they brought it back but apparently people are too immature to see a drawing of a woman[at least, the top half. lol]

but yeah, i wouldn't call them the MS of coffee, either... Starbucks is the biggest chain, but it's actually good products. :P

Interesting history!

Well, their stuff is really good but also extremely sweet. Everytime I drank their coffee, it felt like someone had dunked in way too much sugar. >>;; Plus, I recall an incident of me being hyped on Starbucks and trying to chew off someone's arm. :p

I prefer Coffee Bean 'cos their coffee ain't so ... sugar-psychedelic inducing. :)

Perhaps calling it the McDonalds of coffee would have been more appropriate, but I've been to some places in the world where you would least expect to find a Starbucks, and lo and behold, there they are. Also, personally, I find their normal black coffee quite awful, but in most other respects, they do have a good product. That being said, there are also quite a few lesser known coffee houses that have equal if not better product. (I personally like Bigfoot, but I think that's just around here in the northwest USA). In any event, I would only in the most loose terms actually describe Starbucks as the Microsoft of the coffee world, hence the :-o emoticon after the statement. My apologies if I offended anyone who is actually employed by them.

Perhaps it's the mother image associated with a non-nutritious beverage.

Again all of this is in the article I linked in the opening post.

I actually am deeply against Starbucks® for ethical reasons, but I found the OP article interesting.

I read they got there inspiration and idea from Peets Coffee, which is 100 better.

I support locale and independent Coffee Houses instead of Starbucks® investors.

You can too, if you live in the USA, Canada, and the UK by using the Delocator:

(a website devoted to finding alternatives to Starbucks®)

I'm just curious... What ethical reasons are you against Starbucks?

You should PM me this question. I don't want the thread to be sent to the backyard.
