Just use the built-in spell checker, which works across every GTK/GNOME app

Well, there's LanguageTool (http://www.languagetool.org/) which is a java based language checker that can either be standalone or a plugin for OpenOffice. It doesn't really have enough rules built in to be totally dependent on it, but it can catch some simple but common mistakes like there vs. their, etc.

http://www.spellchecker.net/spellcheck/

I use it for papers when I'm too lazy to boot into Windows.

I have used both language tool and spellchecker.net before. I think, spellchecker is good enough, but as as for language tool, there are still grammatical errors that MS Word detects that langauge tool cannot.

Very true. Language tool can't catch any complicated errors like MS Word can. LanguageTool isn't a good replacement for knowing grammar; it's just a good proofreader for checking common mistakes from people who do know grammar. I wish we could get something that is on par with Word. That website works pretty well.

ha, ha. Very true about these forums, too. There are a lot of critical people.
