This thread is simple - simply tell us the last band or artist you discovered, either by yourself or by recommendation from a friend/relative, and you really got into. Remember to tell us the genre, and recommend one song for people to hunt for themselves.

For me, it's a prog band called "Marillion" - I've never heard of them until earlier today, and I'm impressed by what I hear so far (especially the riffs!) A song I recommend is "Blind Curve".

Your turn!

Ray LaMontagne - check out Trouble (both the song and the album). He's a great American singer-songwriter, not very big over here in the UK but absolutely brilliant if you don't mind the odd depressing track!

Marillion. :D

Still need to get some more of their stuff, but I have 'Script For A Jesters Tear' (their first album, I believe) and like it muchly.

Last band I discovered would probably have to be Sack Trick. A friend introduced me to the song "Penguins On The Moon" and I love it.

Most recently, it's been Mark Mulcahy (you might be more familiar with him in Miracle Legion/Polaris, the group that provided much of the soundtrack for the popular Nickelodeon show The Adventures of Pete & Pete), Linda Perry (of 4 Non Blondes fame) and Carbon Leaf.

Within Temptation? They are just another Lacuna Coil clone along with Evanescence. No disrespect meant but I dont think they are that talented.

I suppose the band that I "discovered" was Gojira a metal band from France, but I only listened to it after hearing good reviews from Machine Head and Lamb of God which are two of my favorite bands.

I've been meaning to check out Divine Heresy, do they sound similar to FF? Cause I'm bot the biggest Fear Factory fan, but I do like them.

I have very recently rediscovered Eyvind Kang, in his latest album "Athlantis" with the incredible participation of Mike Patton and Jessika Kenney (the most incredible female voice I've ever heard).

The last "recently discovered" band I've gotten into is Equilibrium: they're a pagan folk metal band, really talented. I recommend searching for Wingthors Hammer from their record Turis Fratyr.

My friend gave me Code Monkey...his best song, IMO.

The band I discovered was discovered about...perhaps half a year ago? I don't listen to new bands much. The band name is UVERworld, and the best songs, IMO, are D-technolife, CHANCE!, Colors of the Heart, EMPTY96, and SHAMROCK.

Are you on crack? What have you heard of WT? WT and LC sound nothing alike, except for the fact that they both have female singers. Not to mention the fact that WT formed first...

As for a band I "discovered", I recently went to Wacken festival in Germany and saw a load of bands I hadn't heard before/didn't know that well. the best discovery had to be Sacred Reich, who were an old 80s thrash band who've just reformed. At one point they featured Dave McClain on drums (now in Machine Head).

Some good songs: "The American Way", "Low", "Who's to blame?", "Surf Nicaragua".

The latest I've discovered is a strange Japanese band called Sound Horizon... They're really good, they make omnibus-type albums (that is, a single story told throughout all of the songs in an album). They're a nice mixture of power metal, some branches of pop, rock, and "world" music, with awesome singers and lyrics (though you have to know some Japanese :P).

Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wxUcVRxR8g) one of my favorite songs in live version.

Another band I discovered earlier this year, also from Japan. This one's rock in the purest sense: Jinn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPtw5UX5AGw). (The video sucks though).

Jonathan Coulton. :)
He produces his own songs. And they are usually under CC.
And if you've seen the show 'Cody Monkeys' on G4, he did the theme.

Well that depends. The guys in Lacuna Coil were together as a group a little longer but under a different name. So.... kinda up in the air. Lacuna Coil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacuna_Coil) Within Temptation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Within_Temptation)

***_MMA_ would kill to go to Wacken.

Yeah. Sacred Reich has always been one of those bands to me that shoulda got more credit. I do have to give their newer stuff a look.

I heard about Gojira from my friends in Misery Index a while ago and they are a killer death metal band.

Check out the link I posted. :)

It does sound a lot like Dino-era Fear Factory. (which is to be expected)

One of the latest I have discovered is a band call Warmen.

They are a Neo-Classical Metal band (Classical music done on heavy guitars and fast drums!), and I think they are awesome. The Salieri series of tracks are spectacular pieces.

Xenomorph. I've had some tracks sitting on my hard drive for ages never having time to actually listen to them. But after couple of months of mainly listening to metal some psytekk/dark psy feels kind of refreshing.

King Crimson.

One of their songs on was played on Children of Men (great film by the way) and my father told me who they were. Apparently not that well-known outside Britain (that honour goes to Pink Floyd instead), but they're still one the best and most influential progressive rock bands to ever exist.

Not that well know outside of Britain???? Not so sure about that one...

But yes, they are one of the best and most influential prog rock bands ever!

Shadows Fall
Metal Genre

Songs: A Fire in Babylon
The Light That Blinds

I first heard of them from playing Guitar Hero 2. They're one of the bonus songs you can get in the game (The Light That Blinds). It's pretty brutal and sounds like the metal of yore. Really fast and loud lead guitars. Their CD 'The Art of Balance' is really good. I haven't been able to hear their other CDs yet.

Not really a band, but Andy Mckee. Go check him out on YouTube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=dt1fB62cGbo). He's the best guitarist I've ever seen.

I recently got into The Hush Sound. They're an indie band, but they have a very unique, enjoyable sound. A mixture of jazz, punk, 70's pop, blues, piano stuff.
It's crack for the ears, man!

To the dismay of many people, My Chemical Romance (alt rock/disputed subgenres).

And Colbie Caillat (acoustic/folk/pop).
