There are various way of installing games with linux. America's army, for exemple, use an executable file that will let you install the game about the same way that you will install it under windows. Many other game needs that you copy some files from the installation CD or from an existing windows install then you'll have to extract the linux binaries in the same directory. But for these kind of installation, there is also some automated installers that will help you install the game, take a look at http://liflg.org/ .

America's Army isn't in any ubuntu repositories, as it is no free software. You have to download it from an official AA mirror, then install it by yourself.

Well i don't know how to install games either and i am very intrested (especially for counter strike which i play with my friends in windows, will it play in network?).

It would be very nice if sb could post some general instructions about installing games in Ubuntu. I think this will prevent many future newbie posts requiring instructions.

Counter strike has to be installed/played with wine or cedega, as there is no native port of it under linux...

I think there will be no problems to play on network.

About installation instructions for games, it's quite difficult to provide as every game has to be installed in a specific way. There are always good how-to's you can find with google.

We should consider posting links to these how-to's for best seller games like Doom 3, UT2K4, NWN, etc... but there is already links to game's websites where you can find all the infos.

I've found this well-known website to be pretty good.

There isn't one single sure fire way to install any given game in Linux. Each game has its own installer and instructions for installing. Perhaps we could start a thread in which every time someone installs a game, they post a step by step on how they did it, and newbies can use that database of knowledge to their own ends. :)

I know AA isnt free as in freedom but is free as in free beer, plus its just a great game. Anyways, so if AA can do an executible like Windows why not use the same installer on other games, that way they all have the same type of installer ppl know what to expect, and it just works, second I think somone (who has the finantial ability to do so) should start a company like MacSoft, (Linsoft?) where all they do is port games to Linux. what do you guys think?

If you like scrolling shooters, try Chromium BSU (http://www.reptilelabour.com/software/chromium/)!

apt-get install chromium

(Kill all sound daemons like esd or artsd before playing if you want sound.)

Most games use a standard install such as "./armyops.xxx" will install it. The Unreal Tournament 2004 is the same way. All native games I played are like that. Install a gaming on Cedega is easy "cedega blahblah.exe" of course you might have to do some tweaking. Although cedega has never played any games right for me even the ones that it should run with out any tweaking. As for someone starting a company to port games it has already happened. But they went out of business. You can find out some about them here http://www.lokigames.com/. There is another company trying the same. I forget the website. You can try http://www.tuxgames.com/ to buy native ports.
