I was having multiple problems with a script provided by a user which was "suppose" to download and install Compiz from git. The script said nothing about installing Konqueror, Kate and other KDE stuff on my computer but it did. The script never even asked me if I wanted those apps but it installed them. I posted my problems repeatedly trying to get help with using the script and the author was not responsive to my issues in order to help me. Due to the repeated errors I was recceiving and the fact that KDE apps were being installed from a script that clearly stated (originally mind you, the author may have changed or "updated" his thread to inform users now) that it was only to download and install compiz-fusion from git I wrote comments warning other users about the issues they'll have and the alternative to using the script is to use Trevino's Repo which is also built from git and Vorian told me to stop giving my opinion to other users. IMO, he has no right to tell me where or when I can write my opinion. I am helping other users by informing them upfront of the issues that will occur. He moved my post to Jail and said that I was trolling when I clearly was not, I was not being arguementative or attacking anyone, I was merely pointing out facts about the problems that occur when using the script. Please look into this because quite frankly I am so sick and tired of the mods using their "power" for the wrong thing.

Your replies were completely unrelated to the problems that the original posters were experiencing. It's like telling someone to switch to Ubuntu because their Firefox font in Fedora is too small.

I wouldn't consider it trolling, but it is definitely off topic and not helpful.

I don't know how you would come up with that conclusion at all. The thread is for getting people the latest compiz-fusion using the provided script. he asked for help on how to solve this. i provided a solution as the author of the thread did not get back to him as he clearly stated that. this is a compiz-fusion thread, it is related.

ok, as no1 responded to my post, i decided to give cf 1 more try. and i was succesful. everything was working fine, and i was browsing in ff and suddenly my screen goes blanc and ubuntu chrashes. Afrer reboot compiz render just the top left part of the screen. what should i do to fix this?

thanks in advanced

you should remove all compiz stuff following this thread
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=533201
then use Trevino's repo instead of this script. This script (if you read for yourself) has repeated problems for many users including myself. It just decided to isntall Konqueror, Kate and other KDE apps when I didn't even want it to nor did the script ask me to install them.

I am looking at this jailed post, which is a compiz fusion / AIGLX interaction that has nothing to do with the method used to install Compiz.

he's asking how to solve his compiz issue. I provided him a way to solve it. uninstall all compiz and config files and start fresh using an alternate method that does NOT install KDE stuff and it does work where as the script does not for not only myself but others. I was not trolling and was not off topic please explain to me why my thread was jailed. the thread I linked to is completely related to removing compiz so a person can start over and not have all teh various compiz files intermixed with the various way to install it.

He requests help with a screen corruption issue, and you tell him to install Compiz using your favorite method? It is not relevant help. With compiz fusion being something not in the stable release, and the fact that there isn't a clear cut or officially recommended way of doing it, we can't have users telling each other to uninstall compiz and do it their own way.

the forums are for suggesting help to other's problems. if you're going to jail every thread where some1 suggests an alternate way of doing something than you'll have to jail all the threads that tell users to use Envy, and other non-supported things. Again, I ask why my thread jailed and I ask that this be unjailed and put back where it was as Vorian had no grounds for doing what he did. He only did it because he tried telling me he was sick of reading about my Opinion and he "told" me to stop giving it. THat's completely wrong! This is an open forum and I can inform other users of what has occured to me freely and as many times as I would like. I would like to this to be handed to the next admin as you're doing anything about this.

Ok, it seems like you and I are never going to reach an agreement on this situation. Can another Forum Councilman take a look at this?

After careful consideration and review of this case it is my belief that Vorian acted with the authority of the Ubuntu Forum code of conduct. I see no reason to vary the decisions he has made.

Also jdong has given a fair and good explanation and I see no need to add to what he has already stated.

well tehn it appears by these standards that you'll have to move plenty more threads to jail when ever people suggest to others to use Envy when the thread is regarding getting the nvidia or ati drivers by other means. also, I still see no reason I was demerited a point. I completely disagree with the fact that the main reason I was jaiiled was because " I was off topic" but if that's the case, I don't see it in the COC that I can be demerited a point.

So based on your decision I guess you'll have to get to work to start jailing many more threads so i'll leave you alone.

There's a difference between what you are saying and the specific circumstances of your post.

In your envy example, if someone is looking to install newer graphics drivers, we would of course welcome all discussion about various methods to go about doing it.

However, if someone installed a graphics driver the non-Envy way, and then asked how to change his resolution, we would not accept suggestions to "uninstall your driver completely, then download Envy and use that", because it's not an on-topic solution regarding the problem at hand.

In the case of the thread that was jailed, the person you were replying to had a specific problem with Compiz Fusion, and you replied telling him to completely remove CF and install it the way you prefer. That is why your post was removed. Had his question been about how to install Compiz Fusion or which installation method is better, you would've been totally on topic to discuss your experiences with the CF script and recommend another repository instead.

I hope this clears it up a bit.

it clears it up but I don't feel an infraction is justified here for merely being off topic.

The only reason the infraction was given is that you have already been warned more than once in the past for similar occurrences, and did not appear to be heeding the warning.

Overall, it's just an infraction point that will expire in short time, after which this will all be a thing of the past.
