OK I was going to leave this until Wednesday but I may as well start the ball rolling now.
The first stage of the Ubuntu Users Social Network project is coming up with a nice design for the user interface. As promised this is an Ubuntu Users project developed and maintained by Ubuntu Users, so we are opening up the design process to you guys.
Anyone who wants to have a go at designing the User Interface (as in the graphical layout) here is your chance to get involved. Please post links to your designs in this thread, I will set a preliminary closing date for submissions of September 14th which may be extended if required.
Once the closing date arrives a poll will be setup where users can vote for their favourite design. We will do this as a two part process, the Logo and the general layout graphics. You are welcome to attempt both if you wish.
The winner(s) will have the honour of their designs being used and they will appear in the site credits with a link directly to either their personal website or their ubuntu-users.org profile/blogspace. They will also be guaranteed entry into the beta program and invited to join the development committee.
If you don't know what the Ubuntu Users Social Network project is, please see the following link:

Good Luck everyone!

Very nice. I like where this is going. Question, are we going the Orkut route or the Ubuntu Wiki path. Stream-lined or media rich. For those that do not know what orkut is, Its googles version of Myspace/Facebook. Should be under 'more' in your gmail menu up top.

The actual site is not up yet, the domain just points to Paladine's blog (for now).

Awesome idea, I'll be sure to be a part of this network when it comes up.
Would is be UN for short?
Maybe there could even be news and a chat client (that could be covered in the future)
But still, seems like an awesome idea.

Good job! I think the boxes containing text shouldn't bleed to the end, but stop right before it, with a ~25-50 px space in between the end of the biggest box and the browser window's edge.

I started out to make a MySpace (MyBuntu) and Facebook (Facebuntu) parody and ended up making a serious logo :o
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4439/ubuntuusersfl7.th.png (http://img205.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ubuntuusersfl7.png)
It's based on the standard ubuntu logo and I think i have the proportions between text, borders and logo about right.
I think the above drupal-based interface looks nice for a mock-up, as a possible jumping-off point but I think to use that design it would have to be tweaked rather alot, with earthier tones and more solid colours to help direct the user. Transparency is fine for a custom-compiz setup but websites need to be clear and bold :) I like the marble logo.

Could you add a White or Black border around the letters so it doesn't blend in as much with the pic behind it.
And, just wanted to say to the site owner, please remember to follow KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) :) and this would be way better than facebook or myspace.

You can see my effort currently on the main site:

The content box needs some work but I love my top panel/logo.

Hey, so far so good!
I would recommend trying to get that round/browness that the Ubuntu site has.
Also, will it be sort of like Myspace/Facebook? I recall running across some web software that would allow you to make a Myspace-like network site, which could be very useful.

Hey, thought I might as well try my hand at making a mock-up. I was heavily inspired by Myspace, Facebook, StudentCenter, Apple's site, and various news sites for the initial look.
I did this on my mom's laptop, which only had MS Paint, so bear with me here...
EDIT: Also, I don't know any HTML to make this into an actual site template. Sorry!
EDIT 2: Er, might as well explain a bit of the layout. The rounded area above the login is a small announcement advertisement. It would link to some video on the site, of the latest Linux tech on Ubuntu.
To the right, the big black space would regularly change with news, information, bands, etc. Perhaps it would be flash-based, with several cross-fading animations of one announcement to the next. Below the picture is a small news description, as well as two or three related links. Clicking on the picture would take you to that announcement on the site. Maybe it's an article, maybe an interview, who knows?
Also, a nifty "New Users" would appear below the login, and one could scroll through the newest 20 or so members, and add them if they want to. Again, I don't know how to implement any of these, they're just ideas.
Oh, and as a final thing, I think there should be a "Hotties" section of the site, for Ubuntu users (and non-Ubuntu users) to show off their good looks, and disprove that joke about Linux users being unable to get girlfriends.
Cheers,
Mr. Psychopath.

Just to let people know, more information about the project can be found on http://www.ubuntu-users.org/ and Paladine's blog http://blog.paladine.org.uk/?cat=12.
Paladine (aka BeamerBoy) has been unable to access the forums due to a disagreement with a mod and the ensuing argument, so if anyone has been trying to contact him via PM the messages have gone unread for the last few days.
We're still coming up with new ideas and features at the moment - if you have any suggestions or comments try Paladine's Blog, the Launchpad teampage https://launchpad.net/uusn or join ##ubuntu-users.org on the irc.freenode.net IRC network, or these forums :)
Keep the designs coming =)
