If I was forced to choose between Bluray and HDDVD, I would pick Bluray any day of the week even if HDDVD was much better than Bluray. My reason for picking BD over HDDVD... Microsoft. I don't want MS to earn a royalty for every HDDVD disc created (blank or content media). However, I won't pick either until one of them is gone, dead, and buried for good. I won't support the double format discs as that delays the inevitable. I will stick with media I can easily back up as I'm sick of purchasing the same movie over an over thanks to DMCA BS.

Let one die. Boycott both until one is gone.

My preference right now, though, would be HDDVD (because most of the movies I would buy are on HD now...) and the players are cheaper.

I don't use an HDTV, so I have no reason for wanting a HDDVD. I would like the bluray disc, though, because it can hold 25GB of data, and will be VERY helpful in trying to backup whole OSes.

I see no reason to pay for higher quality video. What I would like to see is DVD quality, but with fewer discs. That way you wouldn't need like 10 disks for Fedora, or 4 discs for The Simpsons.

From everything I've seen, I think Blu is the winning format at this moment, even with the recent announcement by paramount that they were going HD DVD. I also might add that Blu Ray seems to be the one more out there for PC recording with both OEM and retail drives (expensive as they are). HD DVD burners seem next to nonexistant, with a select few coming with Toshiba OEM PCs.

Personally, I find both offensive at the core with their (or perhaps better put the companies) desire to root DRM/AACS into your machine to play their content. I'm happy with DVD movies right now, and don't really have a desire for HD stuff. I do think I'm leaning a bit more toward Blu because of it's high capacity and the fact that it's not Microsoft (we know their in the HD DVD camp after all).

I'm not buying anything till one of the idiot sides gets wiped out anyway, will serve them right.

Edit: Oh and init, I fail to see what your getting at... these two new formats do bring larger capacities than DVDs with 15 GB per layer HD, 25 Blu (both are mostly dual layer disks). DVD was 4.7 a layer.

I'm not a huge fan of either of the developing companies, both are fascists in my eyes. (Microsoft vs Sony) I picked up a bluray burner so my roomate and I could experiment with PS3 games, it's nice to have large storage discs, but it's really not as impressive as I first thought it would be. It really wasn't worth the money. I backup anything important on my external HDs.

And that is the reason I wont be getting a blu-ray drive. Why back up to a whole bunch of blu ray disks when it's much easy to back up EVERYTHING to 1 dedicated external Hard Drive. As far as high-definition.. I'm not interested.

I love Sony, mainly for their Playstation products, and I currently have a PS3.
Blu Ray movies look absolutely amazing on it, the quality is simply incredible.
It'd be really ironic if HDDVD lost the format war, and MS had to put a Blu-Ray drive upgrade to be able to watch movies, using Sony's technology.

I'm happy with DVDs, I've got a small TV and I don't plan on buying anything HD in the near future. Better picture? Don't really care. More extras? Rarely go through the ones on DVDs now.

In PC use they might be much more interesting, though, as pointed out.

edit: I share your hate towards the movie/music business of Sony, but I have nothing bad to say about their electronics and computer entertainment stuff which are done by pretty much separate companies inside the same corporation. It's just sad that the record business has so much power inside the corporation that the rest of the company has to follow their stupid ideas about copy protection and DRM, even when it makes their products worse. :P

Steve Hirsch, who is head of Vivid, said he will also be using the HD DVD format due to its greater market saturation. But he also said the studio will begin burning to Blu-ray as soon as it's feasible (i.e. affordable)

About the topic, I hope neither of them wins before they waste too much money on it. I believe in storing movies/music etc. on servers, with no hard media involved.
Where you stream the content to your tv and you don't have to restrict yourself to a disc.

I prefer good old DVDs, but if I had to choose between HDDVD and Blu-Ray, I choose HD because the players are much cheaper and sony is worse than microsoft in my opinion. Sony's laptops: overpriced and slow. Sony's PS3: Overpriced and overpraised...their products are just waaaay too expensive.

I choose neither. IMO, there is no format war. I predict regular DVDs will win just like Windows XP has won the OS war between Mac OS X, Linux, and Vista. How much cleaner do you need the picture?

Remember VHS vs Laserdisc? VHS won because everyone has one.
Anyone remember VHS vs CED? Again, VHS won because everyone has one. DVD is killing VHS mainly because it's smaller and easier to store.

Just look at how long 3 1/2" floppies were around before CD burners were cheap enough. An alternative to 3 1/2" floppies was long overdue, but nobody was moving to any of the other existing alternatives (ie Zip disk).

Most people have a DVD player, and most people are happy with them. Why should they replace something they're happy with? If USB flash drives keep getting bigger, I could see that eventually replacing DVDs. No more scratches and skipping movies!

I don't think about blu-ray or HDDVD... You know why? HD programming is just hype; it offers no benefit over traditional programming except that I can now count the number of freckles on the co-stars cute behind...
I once heard someone complain about the Matrix in high-def because you could see ALL the blemishes on the actors faces, which detracted from their experience.

As for a storage medium, unless you're downloading loads of TV programs or software(illegal or not), who needs to "burn-off" that much data??
IMHO - removable media in the form of spinning discs is already obsolete. Solid state technology is improving exponentially (there's a 64gb FLASH HDD), and more alternatives to the removable CD/DVD/etc. are being discovered every day(holographic storage, for example).

blue-ray has the most storage capacity (50 GB with dual layer) so it is the best for games but with movies just a normal DVD is fine

I hope blu-ray wins the war. A lot more storage space = better quality. 5gb dvds arent going to cut it anymore. Im not committing to anything until there is a definite winner though.

Bigger discs does not necessarily equate to better quality. Think of this: will the media companies provide us, the consumer, with a higher quality product when we could just "steal" the media online(Torrents, etc.)? I think the larger capacities means a higher crap to content ratio. A bigger capacity means room for advertisements, root-kits, etc. etc.
I'm not saying that we won't see some increase in quality, but we will also get more crap along with it.

Funny how that this should be brought up. Literally last night, my friend and I were having this same argument. He IM'ed me, saying how GREAT and WONDERFUL Blu-ray was. And I'll admit it was slightly better quality. But the prices they want for those things are just ridiculous. I was looking at the players. 450$$$ I mean COME ON. How do you expect me to pay that much for a PLAYER. I will take my regular DVD thank you. HD DVD is A LOT cheaper. But Microsoft is in on it, which they have enough money already. So again, I'll just take my regular DVD. Then if I need to back stuff up, I got multiple jump drives, 120GB external, and a few CD's. Granted I'm sure the price of all of those is a lot more then a Blu-Ray disc. but Then I need a burner. Which I'm sure is NOT cheap. The only thing good about Blu-Ray is you pay 10 dollars more for alittle better quality, which, you've got to admit, isn't bad.

i have a ps3, a 1080p HDTV (full HD) with HDMI connection, so I'm seeing the best picture possible from blu-ray, and yes, blu-ray movies look better than dvd movies, but I won't buy any until this stupid format war is over (i rent blu-ray movies now). and to be honest, live-action movies shot on film aren't improved with a high-def format - you just see all the film grain. stuff shot on hd tape look much better, and computer-generated movies like ant bully really look fantastic, but normal films don't really look better on blu-ray.

i think that's its really just how each one sounds. hd dvd just feals like another dvd, but if you hear blu-ray it sounds like something else, something new and better.

Also i think that if you are blowing 5 grand on your 72'' tv just so that you can watch movies in a slightly better resolution, then you don't deserve to even have a tv. if you think of how that money could do so much more than just watch tv, it could entirely change someone's life.

I like the whole concept, But what I [B]don't[B] like is all the DRM crap hanging of all of this.
I think the best thing to do is to wait until the technology is mature, can be bought at a reasonable price, and this stupid format war has ended.:)
